Fitting a cheap reversing camera

I bought a cheap (£8.29) reversing camaera from eBay. search for:
12V-170-HD-Car-Reversing-Rear-View-CCD-Camera-Backup-Parking-Night-Vision-UK
To fit to my Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB Double DIN Head unit that I have in my convertible UK spec 996.2
so bear that in mind when reading this, It's not a "one size fits all" solution!
Base requirements;
a video cable between the head unit and the camera (in the kit)
a signal lead to tell the head unit that the car is in reverse
(In the kit I bought, this signal lead is built in to the video lead - handy!)
power cable for the camera (in the kit)
approx 1m of wire to extend the signal feed.
a drill
20mm hole cutter (in the kit)
soldering iron + solder
insulation tape + heat wrap
torx, screwdriver, 5mm Allen key
trim tools
poking stick
Routing the video / signal wire
Put the roof into the maintenance position (so the leading edge is 12 - 18 inches from the A frame)
reach under the rear of the roof and undo the steel "check" cables on both sides
Push rear section up to reveal the carpeted area (make sure the roof is secure, you don't want it falling back when you're working back there!
Remove the plastic tabs and lift the carpet on the drivers side.
Towards the back of the car, you'll see the main loom go through the bulkhead
Above that, there is a blank grommet. I pierced a hole through the centre of that and used a "poking stick" to get the cable through that to get into the engine bay. the other end was fed down past the speaker in the 1/4 panel.
I removed the boot / frunk switches panel from the sill and fed the cable down through there, around the footwell (under the carpet) and up to the back of the headunit.
Plugged the video cable into the brown camera in socket and connected the reverse signal wire to the purple signal wire.
Sorted.
Remove the rear bumper/
four screws on the engine cover sill, three at the bottom, two either side at the bottom and finally two screws up inside the arches (one either side)
Why are they a mix of torx and philips head? anyone??
remove the offside rear light cluster (one bolt) and disconnect the cable.
peel the protective sheaf (neatly!) of the car side wiring loom to expose the wires
if you can, use a good set of wire strippers that will expose the wire without cutting the cable.
strip back 5mm of the blue wire (reverse) and the thicker brown wire (ground)
protect the bodywork, then solder the power cable into the stripped wire (Red to the blue, black to the brown)
I also soldered in a 1m length of wire to the blue wire to provide power to the reverse signal feed.
I fed those new wires through the small hole in the light-cluster "well". I put some tape around the wires and around the hole to stop chafing (Make sure there's still a hole though as this is a drain too)
I routed these cable along the very back of the engine bay in the gap between the air box and body. Secured them to existing loom. and routed them out of the hole just to the right of centre. again, securing the cables against chaffing. I soldered the extra wire that I'd connected to the blue cable to the red wire that's integrated into the video cable. Heat wrapped and taped.
Sorted.
Fitting the camera
The kit included a 20mm hole cutter
so I measured the area between the number-plate lights 20 times.. taped it up.
measured it again
drilled a 2mm pilot
amazingly was in about the right place
had at it with the hole saw
Fitted the camera
Nice fit!
Connected the camera to the video and power
Tested it to make sure it all worked
Re-fitted the bumper
Sorted.
But we're not all done.
The number-plate is pretty low and because of the angle, the view is mostly floor.
Actually. It's entirely floor.
So bumper came off again, the camera was removed and I used the hole cutter to redo the hole at a 45deg angle and some bits of plastic a packing material to bring the angle of view up.
Much better!

Verdict
Quality wise, It's no IMAX visual treat, but it's clear enough to see everything you need to.
the wires in the kit are very thin - barely a a handful of strands, so it's not easy soldering them, but they work.
It took about 3-4 hours to complete - but i was pretty methodical (read slow!) _________________ 996.2 Carrera 4 Convertible Tip
