Hello, am new here and also new owner. I did my homework and I bought from UK tranferred to Cy a 2005 997's 81K and a major bore scouring repair last year August at 79K. I got the car few days back and finally drove it for less than a week. First day low battery due to (1 month or so idle condition) i check fluids and I had to add 2 liters of engine oil (mobil1 ow-40) to reach 1 box above min at the electronic gauge. Today it was again low had to add 0.8L to reach a box level bellow max just to be sure about it and continue monitoring it on the next days... it seems weird to me that in less than a week with less than a half fuel tank consumed I had to add this much oil. No visual floor marks of oil in my garage. The worst part is that the left exaust tips became black! I cleaned them with a cloth and I will monitor that further... left side exaust means 4,5,6 cylinders which are already repaired 2000miles back!!! By the way i run a diagnostics check and I got P0011 code (a camshaft position - system performance bank 1) I don't know if this is relevant or not... sorry for the long post. For any commends thanks in advance.

It does not sound good news as presented - high oil consumption, left pipes sooting. The water level falling is suggesting a leak somewhere - rads or the water bottle in the engine bay would be the likely areas to investigate.

The fact that it has had a rebuild 2k mile back means nothing without seeing the invoice of both what was done and by who. A true rebuild will replace all 6 liners with pistons, preferably with Nikasil liners, examine the crankshaft and bearings and replace/regrind/replace as needed. New timing chains would be put in if anyone uses a thorough approach the likes of Hartech in Bolton England. Hartech also machine the water channels to improve cooling on Bank 2 (cylinders 4,5 and 6) and will measure many of the components and advise what else needs to be changed.

Was the sale private or through a dealer? If the latter you may have some warranty to fall back on and push the car back to the trader to sort out. If it was private, did you have a full Pre-Purchase Inspection with borescope to see and check for scoring in the bores?

Logistically, if you have had the car delivered to Cyprus,it does limit the options for you to take up the matter with the seller (private or trade).

I think you need to determine a true oil level as you are adding to an unknown quantity.

Drain the oil, refill along with a new filter, measure accurately what you put in, then you can monitor consumption, this may entail dropping the oil again to check actual usage sgainst that indicated on the gauge.

An oil change can be done in an easy hour without even jacking the car up.

Cheers

...you don't need to change the oil; just dip it ,cold and on the level and check again after use...you can then determine how quickly the oil is being used...however looking at the tail pipes along with the rest of the pertinent issues suggests that you have bore scoring again?[/code]

2k on a rebuild? that is not a rebuild that is a minor refresh at best!

most rebuilds done properly are in the 7-10k range.

Did you buy from a dealer or private? If the former, contact them and go from there😉

£2k... did I miss something? :dont know:

Cyprus being more or less hot all year round and using that kind of oil viscosity, dont think its a good idea reckon a thicker oil?? But too late damage seems to have been done!! Who carried out the rebuild??

I've yet to find the dipstick on my 997

It's probably behind the steering wheel...

There is no dipstick on a 997 .. stupid idea to get rid of them as it cause's no end of problems with ALL newer Porsches .. sigh .

Ok you added oil to bring it upto 1 segment from the bottom ..

You then added 0.8 more to bring it to 1 segment from the top .. as each segment is approx 0.4 then all you have done is raise the lvl to pretty much were it should be ..

The cam sensor fault .. if this came in off the street i would start with checking that sensor and maybe replacing it .. after an engine rebuild though it gets me thinking has it been timed up correctly .. unfortunatly this is a garage job to investigate this fault as they may have to check the actual chain timing on that bank .

Sooty tail pipes though .. thats not good and on that bank does indicate bore score .. if both then we could go the AOS route .

To have a rebuild and then a bore score issue is not something ive ever herd of ... it generally takes a lot more than 2k miles to get to that point !!

The only way of proveing is a boro scope check at a local garage im afraid ... a camera you put in the spark plug holes to inspect the cylinders for damage .

Atm you are left with drive it for a week and see if you have to add oil and also if the tail pipe goes black again .

As much as it doesn't sound great in your description, I suggest you monitor it as there are other things that can cause the tips to go black . bore scoring is very sooty and you would normally expect to find sooty debris over the rear bumper as well .What paperwork have you got to show who and what repairs were done and the cost as this would indicate much more , eg was it a full rebuild or was just the scored cylinder repaired (often a cheap job done to move the car on). with all things there are good repairers and bad repairers. the one thing that you mention that concerns me a little is the fact you put mobil1 0W40 oil in it were you told to or is this just you not knowing what you should use. with a rebuilt car with 79k on it you really need to be using 5w40 or ideally 10w50 millers nano+ would be my choice. and as said given the temps in the eastern med even more important . Is there a Porsche specialist over there who can borescope it remember all cars will have borescuff so the person scoping it needs to be able to tell the difference between scuff and score. also while its there get the car re checked for fuel mix and other factors that may need adjusting . I do hope you haven't been caught out by someone moving on a car with a known issue. good luck and keep us posted :thumb:

Where is everyone getting £2,000 from?

Do you have an invoice to show what the rebuild involved and parts used? Did you buy from a dealer?

The only way to be sure of the condition of the cylinder bores to get them looked at with a borescope.

Is the engine making a tick-tick-tick noise?
