Help with hire?

Hi folks!

Not sure if this is the right place, but maybe someone kind soul can give me a pointer or two. I'm looking to hire a classic Porsche for a few days, in order to see if I'll like one enough to buy. Why hire, you ask? My thinking is a standard test drive just wouldn't be enough time to make a decision.

Admittedly, I know very little about classic Porsche apart from what I've read but I've been in love with the iconic shape/styling since I was a kid. The models I'm interested in are the 964, and 993. I did think about a 930 turbo, but I have a feeling it wouldn't be quite as refined as I'd like. That said, I'm happy to try!

I have searched online for classic Porsche hire companies, but haven't been able to find what I'm after. One site/company, who I won't name because it probably contravenes forum rules, gave me a right run around after a promising initial contact. Yay!*

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Darren.

Welcome and good luck with your journey to ownership!

I can't help with the hire thing, but I would hate for you to be put off by renting a poorly maintained car that does not drive well- they vary a lot.

911s are 'growers' in my opinion... a test drive or even a normal journey in one might lead you to wonder what the fuss is about.

But then suddenly you get that moment on the right road when it all comes together and bingo, you're hooked!

My point? A few test drives will give you an idea of whether it's a runner or not in your mind, but you have to trust the reputation of the marque and go for it.

And if you really hate it, then you can likely sell it for what you paid for it.

Hopefully someone else will be along to tell you something more useful!

You can hire a classic Porsche, but where are you located?

Test drives are not the entire picture. The ownership experience is much much more.

Even I as a mature long term Porsche owner, didn't realise just how good the GT3 was until I had driven it for about 8 weeks!

My advice would be to trust your instinct on your preferred model, buy from a 'good' specialist dealer who will allow a buy back if not satisfied.

Good luck,

Keith.

Hi Robert, Keith

Thanks for your replies! Yes, I'm aware that hiring/test drives aren't going to tell me the whole story. And, of course, I could find a great hire, and then buy a similar (or even the same model) car but the experience could be less than expected. I just don't know how else to 'give it a go' without taking a fairly big risk.

I suppose I could buy, and then sell if I didn't get on with it (and a trusted/good specialist dealer might be able to help there). I don't have any way to garage it though, so said car would be at the mercy of our weather etc. for a time. Would that matter?

As for hiring, Keith... I can't find anywhere online for the models I'm interested in. I live in Towcester, a few miles from Silverstone.

Hi Keith

Ah, yes, I have seen those sites before, and discounted them due to the car type or location/distance. Not that you were to know that, so thanks for posting!

The Book A Classic site comes close...

https://www.bookaclassic.co.uk

With self-drive options for some of the available cars, but again the models aren't really what I'm after (not keen on any cabriolet/Targa, or LHD). I'm probably being too picky!

As for classic cars and maintenance/upkeep, I really know nothing, but from your answer I'm guessing it's a bad idea to leave them outside/un-garaged in winter.

Cheers,

Darren.

Why don;t you go to some local meet's, join PCGB, ask a few people on here for a ride or to drive their car :dont know:

Have you joined any FaceAche groups and asked there :?:

Speak to 911V or Ashgood or JZM etc and I am sure one of those would let you have a drive, you may think that they are sh!t after the first 5 mins :floor:

If I had a 993 then I;d let you have a try in mine :thumb:

Hi HSC911

I did think about asking private owners... but I came to the conclusion (very friendly though I'm sure folks are) it'd be a tad rude, or presumptuous. A local meet (I'll have to check out where these are) might be a good idea though!

Whenever, or however, this happens, I'm really hoping I don't find the experience a bad one. :)

Hello

You're welcome to come and take my 993 for a spin, subject to me being in the car and you having fully comp Insurance.

I'm based in SW London. They're cool cars but not for everyone.

Thanks

Nick
