Stripped the speedo down to replace the small gear today, easier than I thought it would be.
There is no need to remove the needle from the dial, once the bezel and rear case is off, everything is doable from there, just be aware that the front is delicate so care is needed to prevent damage to the needle and face of the dial.
There is a great video on utube on how to do this job.

Hi,

any tips on how to get the glass off? I have a film of crap behind mine, but don't want to damage the bezel

The only way of getting the glass out is to remove the bezel, this isn't difficult but you need to take your time so not to damage the bezel, it is quite fragile so you really need to take your time on this.
You need to gently prise up the back of the bezel, I used a small electrical screwdriver and slowly worked around the bezel teasing up the back part of the lip until it's loose enough to take off, don't try and lift the lip in one go but carry on slowly working around the unit.
Replacing the glass and bezel I put the unit face down on a hard surface and used a small piece of plastic trim to push the lip of the bezel back down, again working slowly around the unit several times until it was a snug fit.
Link below is of the repair, you may have to copy and paste the link to open

Looks straight forward enough - just being methodical!! Where did you buy the replacement gear wheel from.
TIA
Graham.

I thought it was straightforward enough, like you say just be methodical.
I bought the gear from design911, I thought they took the p#ss on delivery charges of £5, and made a point of telling them !
I think it was £40 Incl del.
Do a search online, you may find it cheaper.

I think I read somewhere that there is a variation in the number of teeth on the gear, mine is a tiptronic and has 15.
I took the speedo apart before ordering the new gear wheel.

If that's the total cost with the gear wheel, then that's a very good deal.
I was quoted nearly 3 times that by specialists, hence doing it myself.

It's the Porsche TAX, not applicable to any other marque!

I used this guy to repair mine, hassle free and a good job. No affiliation.

ATB :)

Has anyone used this guy recently?

Having a job getting him to reply to emails either through eBay or my own account, and the 'phone just rings and rings.

I worry that should I go the eBay route and something happens to the speedo - either before or after he repairs it - I'll never be able to contact him.

Understand your concern Les, sorry I can't help but when he did mine he responded quickly to emails via his i-phone.

He did mine in February, via eBay. Fast turnaround no problems, even changed the bulb because he thought it was due to go.
