Guys after selling my 996 c4s iv been looking at 997. Not in a mega rush but one popped up. Guy lives 3 doors down from me and his selling his carrera 2s 3.8 gen 1 with gen 2 led upgrades front and rear.
His had it jut under 3 years manual 6 speed done 120k. Very good history from Porsche main dealer and indy specialist.
Lst year he done clutch, dual mass, water pump l, service, aux belt and coolnt chnge. Hs 4 Michelin pilots nd good brakes. Dark grey with black leather. Front chin and rear gt3 spoiler. All seals were inspected and confirmed good. 2 keys nd new mot.

Its cheap compared to others models sold on auto trader.

Do i go ahead with it?

Any high milers out there

Go for it. High miler has its good points. Like if it was going to crap itself it would have done it by now. :thumb:

With a good maintenance schedule it's probably good for another 120k...

He has looked after it and maintaned it well. Serviced it every year.

PPI a must. Decide after you've read the report

Price should be under £20k I think.

It is way under 20k. Il go through the paper work and book a inspection

Agree on the PPI, a must on these cars. Now this may just be me, but I'd be thinking to myself "if it goes wrong - worst case new engine - will I be comfortable with the previous owner living so close?"
It's a bit like buying or selling to a friend.........they say you should never mix social with business. Only you know the situation, but it's just a thought that occurred to me, that's all.

This does not have any bearing on the sale, but just a little story.

When I was looking to buy a 997, I happened to be looking at a car which another member on here had an interest in. He had paid for a PPI and kindly offered to send me the report as he no longer was interested.

This was the 4th car he had PPI'd and had spent close to £1800.

I kinda felt sorry for him. Seemed like a genuinely nice chap.

Regards

I would be saying to myself get a ppi and borescope and if its an early one check the vin see if its pre the IMS upgrade if so then you know that might be an issue but generally speaking if its at 120k its best to leave it alone as its done its job so far without issue , if its a newer IMS model then thats not an issue to worry about. So that leaves you assuming the PPI borechecks good then you have a car that your getting for well under 20k so I assume we are talking 16/18k so you buy it with the knowledge that at present its good and in the future it might need a rebuild at 10k which means your into 26/28k for the car . the good news is that Hartech rebuild gen1 C2S are currently selling for a premium and are in the high 20Ks So your not really in theory going to lose out on the car but what you need to know is , if it goes pop and gets a rebuild have I got the extra 10k needed that I can invest in the car to not get back until I sell the car. If the answer is yes then go get yourself a 997.1 and get back to big grin 911 driving. :thumb: :thumb:

But if it's 'way' under 20k a Hartech rebuild wouldn't be too catastrophic financially. If OP plans on keeping it long term a rebuild might be the way to go.

Genuine question: you guys saying "if it goes pop just get a rebuild for £10k" - how simple is that to actually arrange? I mean, do you just put the car on a low loader to Bolton, Hartech work their magic, and it comes back a week later? Or is there a lot more hassle than that? What if the engine grenades in lane 3 of a busy motorway, or on holiday etc.? What do you drive in the meantime, whilst it's being fixed? How do you raise the £10k or do the likes of Hartech offer finance?

I'm not questioning your logic, I get it that if you only pay £16k in the first place then a £10k rebuild isn't a disaster. Who on here has actually had their car's engine rebuilt following failure? How was it for you? Like I said, genuinely curious.

Well im not buying it to have the thought in the back of my head when the engine goes rebuild it. Everyone said the same to me when i bought my 996 but i bought it to drive and enjoy it didnt buy it to worry when the engine goes bang.

If servicing was done yearly and used good fluids warmed up properly why go bang irrelevant what mileage it shows on the clock

I would buy it mate. If it has been relatively looked after there shouldn't be an issue. Make sure you drive it every day.. a 997 for a daily is amazing :thumb:

My 996 4s was a daily and so will this 997. I dnt like my cars to be garage queens i like to enjoy them. People keep going on about how catastrophic these engines are but no one commenct how great a 911 flat 6 engine drives and feels

Obvioisly i wont be buying a abused example.
