Hi all,

Recently developed a odd clink/clunk noise from (what I think) is the back of my '03 996.2 manual coupe.

It happens when pulling off in first or being hard on the throttle in 2nd and 3rd. Also happens in 1st and 2nd when letting off the throttle sharply. Also seems pronounced when on full lock in either direction at slow (sub 5mph). 90% sure it's from the rear.

Clutch and flywheel done at 69k, all tuning forks and cofffin arms, drop links and ARB bushes are done.

Bit of a long shot - is there anything I can inspect/check?! Ive got it on the ramps ready to have a crawl around later!

My thoughts are maybe CV joint, motor or transmission mounts maybe? Is there anyway of checking other than visual? It's almost something feels loose and it's slapping about when accelerating or decelerating sharply! Checked for anything loose in the front, cabin and rear and nothing obvious...

Thanks!

engine mounts? are they the original ones?

mine used to do this and when we took them out they were fubarred.

if its is mounts then worth changing to the 993 RS ones and get them from Type 911 in kent and speak to matt. done me a great deal cash

also tightens up the rear of the car and improves handling. great mod to do

given its under load its worth checking.

what about the ARB and the D bushes that sit in those? again they would contribute to the noise.

Mounts are original, cars done 76k now.

As for the ARB bushes, they're new powerflex ones.

Guessing they motor mounts can't be seen to be defective until replaced?

Thanks for the tip on replacement options 👍

Check the bolts that secure the diagonal support bars particulary at the sill end are fitted at the right end of the bars and that the torque value is correct.
I had a similar noise that was driving me mad and it was these bolts that were not torqued correctly and the entire sub assembly was clunking/creaking under sharp acceleration .
My car had previous to my ownership had the engine dropped to fit an AOS and M030 and was not put back together properly by a North west specialist that should know better!!

A sound clip is always helpfull ;)

Check your wheel bolts are tight !

The brace bars from the lower engine safety bar to the body by the jacking point .. make sure those bolts are tight . and again the bar from left to right ... this if not tight will make a knocking noise and it took me ages to find it the last time .. sigh .

Everything else has been covered from what i can see.

I did try to get a sound clip but I need an extra pair of hands to help whilst I drive!

I have measured the exhaust tip and and the right hand side is approx 1 and a quarter inch from the bumper, whereas the left is just under 1". Original mounts - they probably could do with being replaced I would think at that age.

Will check all the strut bars in the morning but hadn't thought to check those!

yep I was going to say that about the exhaust tips, measure them and if they are not level that is a sign that the mounts are shagged.

here is the link to the uprated mounts:

https://type911shop.co.uk/epages/de...ca1-377e-432e-84fd-bdccf2206766/Products/9793

they are awesome and have sorted my 996 out a treat. they are not as extreme as the rennline or RSS mounts so hardly any more cabin noise.

Thanks buddy - will get them ordered after I've checked the other bits. See if that solves it...

This.

I had a clunk creak on/off the power and pulling away after fitting a new clutch and flywheel

The bolts were right on my car but still creeek

This bar is alloy so clean corrosion off the mounting faces of the bar and the mount and re tighten the bolts.

Sounds like a job for some chassis ears.

Aint that the truth!

Checked all the struts, all loosened, cleaned and re-torqued. Still a clunk! Even checked every other bolt head I could get a socket on. All tight.

Motor mounts and transmission mount do look suspect...but we'll see.

Nipping to the specialist Thursday before i go away to get a more final opinion before I start replacing bits!

Update....

Specialist things it's rear pads moving as no shims fitted!

Fingers crossed that's it as that will be the cheapest easiest to fix suspension problem I'll ever get on a 911!

Will update if it sorts it..

Could well be?! I had that on my 944 25 years ago and it was diagnosed as worn rear output shaft bearings by another well known specialist!!?
That is why I do most of my own work these days.
