Going through the Simplon pass on a very warm day my 997 got very hot, the oil temperature gauge rising to nearly 120 degrees at the highest point of the mountain. It was at this high temperature for around twenty minutes.

As soon as we started descending down the other side it quickly returned to around 95/100 degrees. Anything to worry about ?
We used about 1/2 litre of oil on the 1100 mile journey to Lake Como.
Here she is having a breather in Varzo, Northern Italy:

I don't think you need to worry. Track day guys will do those temps. On a side note, alot of my family live not far where you are now. Such pretty views, and let's not talk about the food.

Nah, Mine got pretty hot around Europe's passes. I was actually surprised at how well it actually managed its temperature when its mid 30's outside.

I always used to have a steady few miles before stopping just so it'd have chance to cool off.

thanks guys for putting my mind at rest.
I suppose the higher you go (2000 meters) the hotter it gets. Something to do with the atmosphere maybe ?
doing the Stelvio pass tomorrow, will try to post some pictures. :)

More than likely that as you climb the car is mostly under load. Ambient air temperature should fall the higher you go.

Hi, I've done the stelvio on my motorbike and found it rather disappointing apart from the spectacular views. As for the oil, mine regularly hits 110-120 degrees but, it doesn't use a drop. I've got millers nano in mine so, maybe time change to millers?

Anyway, the boiling point of oil is something like 300 degrees so, you will be ok.

Have a great time :thumb:

The air's less dense so the engine will be working harder (in addition to going uphill a lot ;) )

Returned home in 2 days via the Stelvio pass, Umbrail pass and Fluela pass stopping in Davos and Strasbourg (beautiful old hotel in Petite France called Le Bouclier D'Or).
We did 2890 kms during the 13 day trip to Como. Amazed at how comfortable the sports seats in a 911 cabriolet are. The car didn't miss a beat. We used about 1/2 litre of oil on the way down but none on the way back. It is extremely noisy in the long tunnels with the roof off ! And you don't get wet in the rain as long as you keep up your speed.
I'm not sure the passes are so much about the driving as the scenery though.
All in all a great trip in a great car. I now have a very crispy forehead.
some photos : no wonder they have such nice chocolate.

My oil temp used to hit 120c on Jebel Jais in Ras al Khaimah (up the road from Dubai), which is a 2000m hill climb from sea level at very high ambient temperatures and I never had any problem with oil consumption.
