Hi Everyone..
you probably guess by the username but my names Pete
I am 35, live in Kent,uk.. I have wife, daughter, and lots of animals..

Saying i am a car nut would be an under-statement. Last count i have had well over 100 cars..
I come from mainly Japanese cars. especially MR2s (all 3 mks) so used to mid engine cars trying to kill you when they can. I even had a race car mk2 mr2.
Other than that i have had a full range of cars from 650hp supras to diesel corsa's.

I have alway wanted a Porsche. and now seemed the right time to do it..
Currently in my stable i have
1990 Mini cooper
2015 ST180 fiesta
1995 2.8 Pajero (love this thing)
2004 Sprint Car RX8 used in the javelin/japanese sprint series

Just swapped out my mini cooper S clubman (2008) for the porsche..

So i have picked up a W reg 2.7 Boxster Black with Black leather
105K miles
Full Porsche/Porsche specialist history. Completely standard other than stereo

test drove it last sunday. Fell in love with the noise instantly.
Had a good think about it on the drive home (3hours) and decided later that evening i had to have it.
He put a new battery on, gave it a service too and i picked it up today
Ross was a top bloke and really looked after me (greatcars on ebay based in oxfordshire)

So I picked it up this morning in this beautiful weather. roof down.. Loved it.. it was everything i hoped it would be... THAT NOISE!!!!

It was a long journey around the M25 back down south with lots of traffic. but home showed the wife, then back to work for this evenings shift! can't wait for the drive home now..

Pictures will followat the bottom of the post.. As normal I have a few questions (sorry i will go searching too)

1) Temp gauge..!! its seems to move a lot. bearing in mind today is very warm. it settles just over pointing straight up (see pic below) in traffic went pretty much ip to the last white line and stayed around there, dropped back down.. I have heard these are not buffered gauges.
So i got home. and checked the High speed fans worksat almost the white line, but i didn't hear a low speed fan before.. so i need to change resistor?
Coming from MR2s i know Mid engine coolant can be a pain. are there bleed points or anything i need to be aware or keep on top fo (how to clean radiator ducts?) or could the water pump be a little tired? any help would be great to keep ontop of!

2) Key. I only have one :( best place to get one in kent. Porsche only?.. expensive?

3)Rear spoiler.. How do i know this goes up? can i test it at all? i can't see it thats all, i have a red light comes on when start the car with what looks like spoiler on it, then i goes out

4) super unleaded only?

5)I want to get another backbox, do you have to take the rear bumper etc off to do it or can you just remove from underneath

6) lastly for now, sorry. It has cut out on me twice when coming to a stop. the revs drop and it seems to catch itself. but twice normally after a long run when coming to a round about itll cut and restarts fine.. (just wondered if there was a common cause to this)

sorry for the questions i hope you can help and this is the right place..

Check temp gauge for ref.. it normally sat just below this moving up to this. only goes above this in traffic

thanks guys!!!

I would loved to have come on sunday but i am already down to work overtime :(

Just walked down to the car.. just to look :) :)
found the spoiler button.. that works :)

also done the oil level check its above max so i shall drain a little out toomorrow morning as i read that's very bad for them

Welcome aboard Young man :thumb:

1 / If you had a/c i would say turn it on then wait a min and put your hand in front of the air ducts to see if each fan was working on low speed .. im pretty sure you dont have a/c so youll have to do it on temperature .

Low speed fans cut in at about 94 degrees and high speed its about 104 degrees .
You have 80 which it will normally sit at but stationary it will go higher .. especially on a warm day like today .
The line up from 80 is 100 .. BUT the gauge is not accurate as such .. its designed not to worry the customer so it will read 80 before its actually that temp and it will read just under 100 when its actually higher .

So high speed fans will cut in with the gauge saying at or just below the white line on from 80 .

All normal from what you have described , if it goes much beyond the 100 mark then its time to consider there might be a problem but we have to face facts .. old rads , old water pump etc etc .. it will be a little higher than when new , so all seems ok there atm .. check the low speed fans and if needed then a resistor or two might be in order .. along with any leaves blocking the inlet to the rads .

2 / Get an Indy to do it .. cheaper although not by a huge amount as the main cost is the key fob .

3 / Fuse panel bottom right by your foot .. there a button in it .. press it :)

4 / Im not a purist .. unleaded is fine .

5 / Yes you can remove it with out the rear PU off ..its not the easiest job if on the floor and removing the PU isnt hard .. although i might need to talk you through it .
Hardest part is seperating it from the exshaust pipes .

Rear silencers are showing their age now .. they split at the seams .. mot failure and it upsets the Lambda sensors so a replacement is a good idear .. be carefull on which one .. some drone .. might sound great at first .. it gets on your tits pretty soon though with the roof closed !

6 / This is probably the main issue out of what you have listed .. you need a fault code check to see if there is an underlying problem ..

I think although to be honest i cant remember that it has a seperate idle control valve that can play up .. but we always start with the basics .. clean the throttle houseing !!

7 / .. oh wait .. theres not one , just as well as this looks like a long post with many spelling mistakes from me .. so a normal post then :D

Boxster .. my favorite range of Porsches .. and ive driven most of them .

Im afraid the 981 Boxster is still my favourite car if i had the money but you have still bought one of the finest cars Porsche make .. IMHO of course lol .

EDIT as you have just posted .. engine at full temp ,, ignition off then on .. 1 min count down then you have an accurate reading .. do that first before draining any.

Hey Demort!!!
Wow.. awesome post thank you!!!!!!!

1) yes.. i have air con so i shall try that. How do you clean the rad ducts? just removed the grill?
And great, so i just got to get used to the gauge moving around then.. yeah high speed fans worked perfect

2) ill give an indy a ring tomorrow and book it in for it
3)found it . it works
4)cool
5)yeah i was getting a toyosports back box and see what i think and go from there
6)yeah it has only happened twice in 200 miles i drove today.

Check when warm the oil? some say hot some say cold.. ill check it when i get home tonight then see where it sits..

I could see me upgrading to the next shape 3.2s in a years time :)

I am very pleased with it :)

Just have a peer in at the rad ducts .. youll soon see if theres leaves in there .. common though as no grills on them .

I use an air line to blow them out .. a hoover will do.

Ok another tip .. open the cab roof about half way .. there is a metal cable strap holding down the rear part of the roof .. you unclip this both sides , unclip the rail that runs from side to side at the back of the cab roof then lift it up .. this is called the service position .. you can just google it of cource but then ive waisted ages typeing this lol .

The point is .. the rear drains are there , you MUST check these for any leaves .. if you have trees where you live then do it often .

If a single leaf blocks the n/s/r drain hole then when washed or it rains water will enter the car .. ok damp carpets no big deal ..

The alarm control unit is under the pasenger seat .. if that gets wet then its a non start and good bye to about £500 .

You have no idear just how many of these ive replaced over the years .. and for a single leaf at times .

EDIT

I cant quite see but you might have after market grills fitted .. if so just shine a tourch in there but i expect they will be pretty clear of debris .

Oil is checked when hot .. if you dont get a 1 min counter then run it for longer untill you do .. its always done at operateing temp of the engine .

Perfect thanks..
yesh there is a grill at the front..
I will defo check the drain lines too.. thanks these a the little tips i like and will keep on top of!!

I see you are in brighton.. not too far from me... don't happen to do the keys?
do you have your own shop?
i tend t do all my own work, but always good to know where to go

Welcome to the forum.

What a day to pick up a Boxster! I was slightly jealous of all the drop-tops out today.
