Engine Oil Analysis Results, thoughts?

I've just had the results from an engine oil analysis by Millers Oils for my 2005 C4S, oil is around 4,000 miles old and engine has 58k miles.

The oil is of unknown brand / type.

Aside from curiosity, part of my thinking was an analysis may indicate any dreaded bore wear / score or crank bearing / journal wear?

Heres the key part of the report - keen to hear any thoughts anyone may have.

I'm trying to find the last one I did on the boxster. Its almost identical I think, including the boron level which I think is an additive

Very little aluminium which would suggest bores are ok.

I get mine done every year - I'll find my results to compare. Do about the same mileage as you.

I havent done it before - but thats a great idea.

I am about to put the car in for a service, so will pull a sample (any recommendation on how to do that - as am guessing you all took samples from a completed drain-down) before they change the oil.

If you have any questions just ask them, they are very good at explaining the results. It really does depend on the oil, my Mo level was about 700ppm but that's down to the oil.

bear in mind if you change the oil frequently 5/6k then the wear metals will have half the concentration vs a normal 12k drop.

Also our cars have double the oil in them as a normal car so again wear concentration will be halved.

But best to speak with millers guys after a test.... and compare your results year on year at the same mileage to see the differences.

Its important to control the variables!

Just had mine back today. All good and as before, about 700ppm Molybdenum from the Millers :thumb:

A great service (very quick) that gives a lot of peace of mind.

I pulled together a sample of 6 'Blackstone' analysis results on M96 engines that I found easily available online to give very broad average of what to expect.

Looking at the big 3 metals they gave 4ppm aluminium, 11ppm iron, 9ppm copper .

For my results, first year I got 1ppm Al, 5ppm Fe, 3ppm Cu.
Second year I got 2ppm Al, 8ppm Fe, 8ppm Cu.

So looks like from a sample of 2, I'm on the rise. Got a third sample now ready to submit so that could give a trend. However in ters of absolute numbers I'm still running quite low so not overly concerned at the mo

Hmm, that makes my Iron, Aluminium & Copper results seem high, relatively speaking, although given the variables of usage / oil type / avg. volume etc. I'm probably worrying about nothing.

Like the report says, bit elevated but not critical. I'd consider moving to a thicker oil as I expect it's been running on 0W-40, a 10W-50 will give you a little more protection. How is your oil pressure at hot idle?
