Nearly fell off my perch when Exeter OPC rang to confirm the price for the software update to the sat nav maps.

That price is while they have the car in their workshop having other jobs done so no way do I believe that a car tech will be sitting in the vehicle during the whole update process.

That amount is just taking the p**s.

Does anyone know of places that can do it for a more reasonable amount.
Older 997's seem to have the discs available to purchase.

I think for now I will buy Europe maps for my Galaxy 8 and save the other £300+.

Porsche Tax to the extreme.

Is that actually a new update or is it still the one that is a few years old now though?

As a benchmark, I paid £150 for the upgrade to v2.24 on PCM3.0, but that was approx 2 years ago, if not more.
I thought that was taking the pish as that price too
Good luck

I had mine updated at Exeter OPC about 2 1/2 years back when it was on offer for £150... tbh save your money, trust me even after the upgrade it's pants!

I use Google Maps / Waze, either are far better.

A quick over view on this as i did one a few weeks ago .. Im at an Indy BTW .

The pack you buy has a couple of version updates in it and a code .. you update it to V 2.23 then 2.24 from memory from the supplyed discs .

These are not given to the customer normally .

The actual Nav update disc is workshop equipment , we payed about £35 for it i think .
This has been updated from the 2015 version but i cant say just how new it actually is .

The code in the pack is actually given back to Porsche who then i assume with some sort of keygen based on your chassis number give us a code that we can input to actually get the new maps to work ( done with a tester ).

Labour time is usually 0.5 hr but to be honest its a ball ache .. the car has to sit on a charger and you load each disc in turn and wait about 45 mins .. basically you have to keep going back to the car and check to see when its finished each disc .

The nav discs are actually x4 discs .. if it hangs on any one disc you have to start again .. try something like 2 hours of messing around to get the dam thing to work is probably closer to the real time .

So .. in essence you are paying for a cheap disc and a code .. trust me .. its not the OPC or any garage making money out of this update .

How much is a Tom Tom these days ??? :floor:

Are Tom Tom still in business?

Waze is much easier

Portsmouth OPC have quoted £215 while the car is in for service.

That will pay the YTS boys wages for the week

Definitely worth it in my opinion. I had it updated last year. By and large it's useless without the updated maps and 7 digit postcode.

I only today bought an updated 2018, full European mapping SD card for my (two year old) daily driver, and from the main dealer for £40.

How can Porsche justify something like £550 for a 2016 disc for my PCM2.1? Just pleased I can buy a 'backup copy' from the Bay for £25!

:bandit:

Just had my PCM 3.0 updated at OPC Portsmouth for £215 and they gave me a cayman S for the day whist they did it.

My local OPC (mid sussex) wanted £345

I don't understand, why bother? The maps are out of date before you install them. Use gmaps or waze, they are always up to date, give lots of additional info including cameras speed limits etc.

Different prices then?

Suprised as the different prices offered by OPC's.

Co-Pilot it is then for my Galaxy Note.

Not sure about Exeter OPC. If I do use them again I will get a second opinion if something 'needs' doing. I got the impression they were looking for things to do on the car at the service. Or rather looking for ways to extract additional cash. I put that in another thread.

Thanks for thoughts and input. I guess the Gen2's do not have the option 'yet' to update the maps by buying them. The need for a code from Porsche may have squashed that option.

Same story when I enquired. Bollox to that thought I. I use Waze when the need arises. As said, much better regarding info and feedback.

Waze is great....Does it work OK outside of the UK tho ? Anyone with experience overseas?
