Hi guys,

Dominic here.....I've put down a deposit on my 1st Porsche and hoping you guys could educate me a little on things to watch for and tips.

It's a 2005 Cayenne 3.2V6 Manual transmission, it has 77,000k miles, full service history with porsche main dealer and specialist in recent years. 1 company owner it's whole life....until now :)

The 1st thing I noticed it does not have the air suspension, but this isn't a massive thing for me, although air is probably something else that can go wrong electrically?

I read a review on Evo website stating that an engine could go in pre 07 models over 70k miles?? really, porsche surly did not build an engine that runs for 70k only....please tell me that' the usual scare tactic crap of one unlucky owner lol

any tips/pointers is well appreciated

thanks

The petrol V6 is pretty reliable so dont worry there .

Mind you its barely a V engine .. 15 degrees angle if memory serves me correct !

No air .. no big deal .. its better but as you say more things to go wrong .. and the compressor for it certainly does go wrong .

Its not a very fast model im afraid .. but one of the better for fuel consumption unless you put your foot down ... it wont go any faster but will drink more .

Water leaks and electrical problems are the main things on early Cayennes .

Hopefully by now the x2 drain bungs for the chambers for the brakes and engine fuse board have been removed .. these tend to block and cause water leaks into the car .

i always pull them when servicing these so i expect they are long gone .

Tailgate struts wear and its x4 not 2 as some garages do .. basically if it falls on your head then replace .. if not its all good .

Dont steam clean the engine .. coils dont seal that well and the plug tubes fill up .. not so good .

Cant really think of anything else but any questions and just post or PM .

@dermot thanks, yes It does seem to be a fairly hardy engine despite that one review I had read about.

On the transmission, when I tried the manual it seemed alot smoother and reactive, the automatic in another I tried just wanted to over rev and was sluggish in my view.

I think, going for the 6 speed manual I made the right call, although the auto in the newer ones nowadays I bet are alot lot better

The electronic tow bar is a big thing to me lol, as they are unsightly things

Hi Dominic,

:welcome: to 911uk

There aren't many Cayenne owners on here I'm afraid but don't let that put you off enjoying the forum banter or attending any of our meetings.

Your car's got the right badge even if the engine is in the wrong place. :D

lol thanks guys

A 911 is one of my bucket list cars, I hope one day to have one....and my god do they hold residual!!! never seen a car like those that hold value as much this side of a defender with over 120k miles lol

I had a Cayenne Turbo S, which was an awesome car at 521 bhp (That was not a slow car). The only real issue that I recall was the coolant pipes tend to fail. They are plastic and go right through the engine, which means they get very brittle over time and can fail catastrophically losing all your coolant which is not great. I am not sure if this was an issue on the v6, but worth seeing if they have been changed to alloy ones which had been done on mine.

I loved the Cayenne but i know it is a marmite car and some people hate them, but i think the front end looks cool and I never had any major issues with mine whilst I owned it.

Hope you enjoy driving it and remember like the 924 was the car that saved Porsche in the 1970s, the cayenne is the car that saved it again in the 2002 and allowed it to continue to build 911 etc! (I am sure that may get a few comments!)

A Cayenne Manual is about as rare as Hens teeth !

Ive seen about 4 Cayenne manuals in 14 years of working on Porsche to give you an idea .. never even seen a clutch replacement on one .

The coolant pipe issue for the V8 doesnt effect the V6 .

Interior water leaks is one of the bigest problems .. with the carpet being so thick you dont realise untill the wires corrode and you have a problem .

Basically just test the car and see if anything doesnt work :)

I like the Cayennes .. but i dont like dropping the engine / box .. its rather a big heavey lump with the box attatched and it kinda scares me !!

Edit ..

Anyone with a Tip needs to consider an oil/filter change ..

These tend to get over looked .. trust me .. get it done if you have one :)

Yes, I test drove a 3.2 tip auto and I thought It kind of got lost between gear changes, the manual seems to be fairly good if I'm honest.

Once I seen the manual ad, I jumped on it as the owner specifically spec'd the it from new, I think he paid more....but not sure.

Does anybody know what Porsche time / mileage Porsche would recommend for a clutch change?

I assume also that service intervals are every 10k miles or 2 years?

Any of you guys know what location the radio/sat nav fuses are? my screen has chosen to not work, so going to try a simple fix 1st!

it should be in your owners handbook .. if you dont have one then let me know as depending on the year i might have a pdf of it .

Right board fuse 9 Cd changer
Right board fuse 11 radio
Right board fuse 12 Amp .

No set time for a clutch .. ive never actually changed one !!

service is every 2 years / 20 km

thanks dermot, I will check these, it was all working fine then the whole screen went blank and won't turn on now, is it still likely to be these fuses?

Thanks

Im afraid theres not an awfull lot else you can check with out putting a tester on it ..

Fuse 11 is a Red/yellow wire that goes to pin A4 on the Pcm
The earth is a brown wire going to pin A8 on the Pcm

So you could check with a meter you actually have these at the Pcm .. you could also check the fuse in the back of the Pcm to see if thats blown .

I went out this morning and tried reset holding 1-4-8 at same time, with key one click right, and it seemed to work, but then wouldn't go on again after when I returned to my car an hour later.

this may sound nooby but I checked the right side fuse box and I cant see any fuses numbered 9-11-12 they mostly are 10, 20-44,5 etc

does this mean it could be drawing to much from battery

@dermot- when you say 9-11-12 are you referring to numbered slots or numbers on top of fuse ?

thanks lad

The cover you take off for left and right have a picture showing what number fuse is where on the fuse board .

The Manual doesnt list a fuse on the left side for No.11 but i would still check that side as sometimes the instructions are listed for LHD cars and its reversed for them .

If it sprang to life with a reset but failed later then i suspect the Pcm is going to need repairing .

i would normally start with a tester on these to figure out a fault so theres very little i can advise you to check im afraid .
