Hi guys my father is thinking of pulling the trigger on an 03 996 manual cab, is there any advice that you can give us on the car, its up with a reputable dealer Mr 911 and have heard hes pretty decent?? any thoughts would be appreciated

If you post some detail on the spec and service history you will get some advice. Lots to read on this site if you have a trawl through.

I looked at a 996T with Clive before I pulled the trigger on one with 911V. Nice guy, straightforward and sensible pricing. The car I looked at wasn't prepped to go but maybe he does that when they're sold and before handover.

I have no experience of Mr 911, so can't comment on the garage

In terms of the car, assuming it's the black 87k mile 996.2 cab on at £16,995 it looks nice. I would be sure to check exactly what money has been spent on it recently - a FSH is a minimum every 2 years on a 3.6 but often doesn't mean much - you need to see the bills. Apart from checking everything works including the hood, body, air con etc, here are a few things that will need doing/have been done to most 996's by this age/mileage. If there are no bills for anything then budget for that work (if it all needs doing then budget around £10k!).

-IMS - these can self-destruct (lunching the engine in the process) but at 87k miles it is probably OK, although you may want the seal to be removed to improve oil flow
-RMS - these can leak and are usually changed with a new clutch
-Discs and pads - can be expensive to replace all round, but lots of options out there
-Suspension at this age will need a refresh - including dampers, bushes, coffin arms etc etc
- Air con condensors - they rot
-Radiators - they rot too
-Brake pipes - likely to be rusty if orginal
-Mufflers - if original are likely to split at the seams
-Exhaust manifold bolts - if they are seized, can be very difficult to remove
-Clutch and flywheel (around 40k miles or so)
-Tyres - should be good quality

The biggest potential issue is bore scoring - something that does afflict the 3.6 engines (albeit around 10%) - to rectify this is a minimum of £5k, but more likely £10k+ as the engine will need a rebuild. To check this and all the above, I would very strongly advise your father to get it inspected by someone who knows 996's - a Porsche specialist near to Mr (11 (but not affiliated with them) perhaps?

He will need c£2k a year to maintain a 996 of this age(and a lot more if lots of the jobs above need doing). They are a great, but old car now, so he needs to look with his head and not with his heart.

Good luck! :thumb:

I had a look at a Targa he had once.
The clutch was notchy and the front was slightly tatty.

But he called the woman I was with at the time "A Woman of a certain age" which offended her greatly as she was only 43 at the time so i wasn't allowed to buy it from him :floor: :judge:

I've bought 2 cars in the past from Clive at Mr 911, never had a problem, clean , straight cars

hi guys thanks a lot for the replies, hes upgrading the ims and doing a borescope, dad is really is keen on the car will ask about the other points

"Upgrading" the IMS can be a bad thing. You should ask exactly what he's doing there.

I would recommend an inspection by Ant at Porscheinspections.com I used him to check out a 996 C4 2001 and he did a sterling effort.

The listed items above are pretty standard. I bought a C2 996 in October 17 and exhaust seems and brake lines were two items that needed sorting. Brake lines sorted by a good clean and grease. Exhaust silencers are ok for now but I will replace them this year.
