OBD Fault/code scanner - buying advice

Hello all,

I'm thinking of investing in a fault/code reader for the 996 (Carrera 2). I have one of those cheap eBay bluetooth ones but they are a bit hit and miss depending on the vehicle and can only carry out basic functions usually.

So I was on the lookout for one that was more applicable to the 911 - something along the lines of the following:

http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod1...Scanner---Eraser-Diagnostic-Tool-for-Porsche/

Does anyone have any experience of using that^ one? Or can you recommend another one as an alternative please?

I have a fault appearing at the moment and have taken it to a specialist that checked and cleared it and asked me to come back when the fault reappeared (which it has now) to further pinpoint it "more exactly". For the sake of re-inspection fees I am considering whether it is worth me buying one of these (or alternative).

Thanks in advance

Hi mate. I have a lot of experience of using handheld tools on different Porsche. My advice is not to go for the i960 kit if you have a 996. Although the kit will communicate with the engine system, it will not work on the ABS or airbag systems within the vehicle.

I know its costs a bit more, but my advice for the 996 would be to go for this kit here - http://www.diagnostic-world.com/pag...Oil_Service_etc__189383-z=564795&p=121453.cfm

I have tried and tested this on a 996 , 986, 991 & 997 with absolutely no issues at all.

There is of course the Durametric, which involves loading software onto a laptop but the cheaper cables are clones from China. An genuine one will set you back around £300 (dont quote me on that though)..

Hope that helps.

Satch.

I didn't just want porsche specific when I bought mine, I'd also got an Audi and a Range Rover at the time so I opted for an Autel maxidiag MD702 which covers most major european manufacturers and isn't limited to just pulling engine fault codes, it will do ABS, Airbag etc and is cheaper than most car specific tools out there.

I've had it a few years now and it's more than paid for itself and saved my brother from buying a lemon that had had it's EML bulb pulled out to try and hide the faults.

Well thats another £179 spent that I didnt know I needed. 😢

I went durametric as I needed it to bleed the brakes.
Also lets me check faults and over revs etc.

Which one do I need to stop my car locking its doors every time I pull away ? It's really annoying. Is it only Durametric that will do it ?

I'm planing on doing a brake fluid change. Why do you need one of these for this?

You don't, unless you let the abs pump run dry.

I'd agree with Satch regarding the iCarsoft - but disagree regarding the Foxwell. The crux of the matter is not whether or not you connected to the car with issues or not, it is the functionality that you have actually have at the end. There is nothing more frustrating than navigating through endless menus only to find the function you need on a particular ECU not there - or (even worse!), the function is there but doesn't work. Not to mention support. For inexperienced users, there is very little as daunting as delving into the electronics of a relatively expensive vehicle. It is hugely comforting to know where to call if you have issues - and that the person you will be calling speaks and understands English.

Durametric. And not the Chinese knock-off cables. They only work with a very early ripped off version of the Durametric software.

As above just a normal bleed you don't. However a normal bleed wasn't improving my soft pedal so I wanted to bleed the ABS. I then changed the master cylinder so definitely had to bleed ABS.

Thanks all - really useful information here.

I think it would make sense for me to go for a multi vehicle system with as much functionality as possible as I do need to access ABS menus (where the current fault seems to lie).

In that regard, where is the best place to buy a durametric system and all the wiring (and to avoid a chinese clone)?

I've looked on line and seen that they are cheaper in the USA so you could buy from there. I'm considering doing the same and buying the cheaper enthusiast version although I'm following this as well, I'll drop ELA a follow up......

Did you make any progress or pull the trigger on one? Think I will need to invest quite soon as my car is not working right at all at the moment :(
