Well it looks like I've finally sold my JCW be sad to see it go !!! However I am now in the market for a 997 C4s manual :thumb:
And my question is if I buy from a private would you insist on a borescope check done ???

Ohh happy times ahead!! :)

If buying privately I would most certainly ask for a independent inspection which would include a bore scope. Alternatively, for a Gen 2 you could negotiate an OPC 111 check & warranty into the final price.

History and maintenance is equally important imo.

Gen1 or Gen2 ?

Definitely worth the outlay for peace of mind on a Gen 1
Saying that, I didn't ... but that was before i found this forum :pc:

Hi there.

First post for me , But just my findings. I bought a 997.1 C4S a few weeks ago. I did half scare my self to death after reading all the forums about how fragile the 997.1 engine is ( you think there would be none on the road  )

But after long consideration I bought my self one . The Gen 2 for me was not an option as it was out of my price range. I did how ever have a PPI check with a bore scope done for an outlay of £300. It was a private sale so I wanted some peace on mind. I have a friend who is a car dealer that told me most the warranties aren't worth the paper there written on. In a way that steered me away from any non Porsche specialists. I did view one at an small independent garage but that was an absolute heap of a car that was advertised as perfect. It was that poor I could tell with in ten foot it was very rough to say the least . During the PPI for the car I bought the bore scope showed it was in very good condition. The technician that did this, Said it was one of the cleanest he had seen even though it had 60000 miles on the clock. Also in its life time he told me it had only been in the over rev range five times in its life. with two being the highest it had been. I didn't really understand  I had read about it but most sites warned about four and five over revs not being good. So surely some two's couldn't be that bad. And he seemed quite impressed with it.

When I bought the car I had a good feeling about the seller who was very knowledgeable and you could tell he had really cared for the car in his owner ship. Hope this is of some help. I would definitely get a bore score and PPI done just for your peace of mind. I was going to even do this if it was from a garage if it was not a well known Porsche specialist.

Gareth.

I would advise PPI with bore scope check if buying a 3.8 unless it is being purchased from a specialist who can prove they have done the checks and can provide images and print out of over rev range results.
