Hi guys

This morning I took my car for a long drive today on route to local my supermarket, I wasn't in there long but when I came out I noticed water underneath my car. I didn't think much of it as I thought it was water from a car being cleaned front of me in the car park. When I was driving home 5 minutes into the journey the coolant alert popped up on the dash board and was showing the needle on maximum (120). It took me 5 minutes to get home after that, I checked the coolant and it was completely empty.

When I brought the car 7 weeks ago I had a PPI done and there was coolant issues the dealer replaced the rad (not sure about the pipes).

I have already contacted the dealer and they are calling me in the morning to arrange to pick the car up to repair the issue/s.

My question to you experts- within that 5 minutes I drove the car after the alert came on would I have done damage to the engine?

Thanks

+1

120 max at 5 mins driving is like sitting in a steam room going red !!! Should have stopped driving there and then !!! To me that dont sound good, I would have stopped the car and let cool down, and call a pickup truck, I'd rather pay £100 to pick the car and take home then a £10.000 engine repair bill !! Possible chances to answer your question, yes driving your car without water would damage the engine more so cylinder head crack and block, in my experiences as an ex. BMW technician I've seen these and the result was a total engine rebuild...

Just hope your engine is ok, if not then be prepared,

Good luck!!

Did it not go in limp d**k mode? You'd think by that age car that would happen if some......err....person tried killing the engine. :dont know:

This doesn`t sound good Geezer 911 :hand:

Driving ANY car with the water removed and the ( no water ) temp at 120C for 5 minutes will cause damage unfortunately :nooo:

Best of luck with the dealer :thumb:

I seriously hope this is a wind-up. Surely you would spot the odd temperature well before the warning, and if not you would stop as soon as the warning came on.

Not good at all.

Sadly i think you should brace yourself, the initial leak may well have been the responsibility of the dealer/seller but any damage caused by driving your car when the engine has boiled dry, well thats down to you.

I genuinely hope for you, early into your 911 ownership, that by some miracle all is ok, but in reality i imagine damage has been done, and i doubt either the seller or any warranty company will cover the damage as a result of.

Good luck.

Its the unknowns that aren't easily detected too......like scored bores.

I'm still shocked someone would drive a £40k car with no water in and at least 2 warnings on the dash telling them. It's the sort of thing I'd have done at 17 in a £300 escort, high, with my pants on fire.

Mister corn. We don't wind people up mate. We are all here to help each other and have discussions and topics etc. On this occasion we can't help you regards to engine damage apart from Hartech Engine Builders BUT hopefully you got lucky and your car survives any damaged caused whilst driving without water in the engine.

Thank for all the replys.

The alert came up once. It was bad judgement from me to try and getting the car home quick.

I will update everyone when it has been looked at.

Good luck.

I doubt it's as clear cut as engines knackered to be honest. Running a fleet of Toyota Land Cruisers the guys at work ran one for weeks without water stopping every now and then to refill when it was empty! When it finally got fixed it was fine and is still running today.

Had a Fiat as a hire car on holiday. Same thing the bag of shite broke down on the motorway, overheated no water (30 mins after collecting from the hire company) no way I was stopping there In the dead of night so drove it as need be off the motorway a good 5 mins plus , topped it up all fine.Fix It Again Tomorriw boom!

A few prophet's of doom on here I think. Sure, it's not ideal what happened. High engine temperature can lead quite quickly to top end seizure. But if you didn't cane it home and it was only 5 minutes, hopefully you'll be fine. The oil cooling hopefully buffered the effects.

But yeah, every day's a school day. If you get over temp again. Stop and sort it
