The hunt begins for my 911, my cars sold and gone now.

So what I've decided on with my budget (20-28k ish) is realistically a gen 1 3.8 manual.

The options and extras I've not fully decided so I'll see what's on offer with what at the time, I'm struggling for time till the end of the month now so that's killing me looking and not been able to get somat. Then again I'm not sure if I'll use it over winter or it can go cuddle my mk1 golf in the garage.

I starting reading up on the 997's and I'd seen a buying guide about checking the bores and ims so just took it as its the 997 weak point all cars have then and this is the 911's

I then joined this forum years ago and started reading all the horror story's and it put me off a little till I read up on hartechs rebuild but in reality bore scoring isn't as much of a massive issue it's made out to be as you know only effecting some.

So I'm stuck between deciding on a low mileage example or a hartech rebuilt one but of course I can't make a decision as I'm not in a position to pull the trigger on one. I'd like your opinion on that though.

So could we have this thread as a positive one about gen 1 cars?

There must be loads of gen 1 owners out there on original engines having no problems!!

Of course I've read if it's an early one it needs to 1k ims doing so budget that in if it's not been done.

Daz, you know my thoughts, I brought a 06 gen1 tip on 40k miles and enjoyed it for 4 years using it as my daily , it lived outside in all weathers and I sold it a few months ago to buy my gen2 when I sold it it had 89k on the clock , I had experienced hardly any issues with it in that time and suffered no depreciation .I can honestly say it has been the best car all round that I have ever brought in all my years of driving inc. many high end cars .when I sold it the car was borescoped and proved to be clean as a whistle . So you can see I have nothing negative to say about the 997.1 .
I did run it on millers nano oil 10w50 and follow the recommended steps to reduce any risks.

Same here, I ran a 2006 4S manual for 4 years, I did loose a bit but other than normal servicing it never needed anything!

A great car, I traded it in against the turbo at a non specialist garage and they didn't do a borescope so can't comment on that.

Good luck with the hunt!

My 3.6 was a good as gold, as Phil says, taking the right steps, maintenance, warm up etc.

Mine was scoped when i changed & was clean. Was a brilliant clean car.

I was chatting to a gen 1 owner at Goodwood on Saturday. His car just passed 105k miles, is driven all over Europe and is running as well now as ever. They are great cars, made to be driven and enjoyed. The chance of a catastrophic failure is very small (and not limited to Porsche as could happen on any car), but if it happens can be expensive to fix. Go in with eyes wide open, get a PPI done before buying and then enjoy

I ran a 997.1 4S until last month (had it for just over a year). Bought through my local OPC with full warranty and it didn't cost me a penny - in fact, I made a small profit on it by selling it privately.

I was prepared to take the risk on bore scoring/IMS but ultimately decided I wanted something air cooled given they are just so iconic. Definitely don't hesitate though and maybe set aside some money for Hartech just in case the worst happens (as others have said, it could happen on virtually any car).

I have a 997 Gen1 C2S which I bought about a year ago. I've had very few problems given it's a 10 year old car and I absolutely love it! If I ever sell it, it will only be to finance a Gen2 997!

The previous owner however... I'll get my coat

When you bought the car with a 2 year OPC warranty you didn't have any risk of bore scoring etc as OPC would have rebuilt the engine for you as a warranty claim.

Why did you decide to sell after just 1 year of ownership?

Rich , I read it that Pierrebear just fancied going aircooled which was his reason for changing so soon. :thumb:
