Hi all

The time has come...

Having owned 911's since '95, I will be looking to sell my current car. An OPC warrantied (until June 2018) & OPC FSH 996 Turbo S (manual, cab) that I've owned for nearly eight years. I'm hoping that it will only be a short break from the brand.

I'll try and be as discreet as poss & not do a 'my car is for sale" type post & will place an add on '911UK" shortly anyhow, but I'm after a little help from the forum first...

My quandary is that I'm genuinely stumped as to where to start in terms of pricing, as it's clearly all over the shop at the moment. Of course, I'm aware of the mad prices that occurred during the 996 Turbo rush a while back, but I appreciate that values have considerably softened since then & of course the "S" divides opinion!

I would prefer to go the private sale route as I'm in no rush to sell, but I'm also keen to get some input as to what folks think are the best routes.
I've sold via eBay, Autotrader (& even random FB linked sites) in the past, so I know the "interesting" posts, offers & characters they generate. A recent sale was a low mileage E46 M3 which generated a barrel of "comedy" messages...

As an aside, a depleted fleet will of course also spur a 'what fun car can I get on a budget" question only Pork owners can answer...

I've had a few offers from OPC's, but they allow (as standard for older cars) a 15k or so buffer for outright purchase offer vs sale price. I admire their honesty on this I guess! But even if they need to spend 5k (in Porsche money) to make a car mint, that's still a good mark up! But I understand that older cars are always a risk.

Mine is seal grey, black leather interior with an OPC warranty, 31500 miles. The only advisories left over from the major a few weeks back are heatshield related (usual corrosion on bolt areas) & they did a whole bunch of stuff under warranty. So, it's in pretty good fettle & a sensible colour combo.

The question is, how should I pitch it & where!!? I simply don't use it enough to warrant keeping hold of it, hence the query.

Thanks in advance...

You've got a relatively rare and very desirable car. This sort of car will always be in demand from Porsche Specialists as they will be able to sell it at a premium retail price.

Your best route is to contact them to see what they would give you as (a) a straight purchase and (b) on a SoR deal.

Once you know those figures I'd pitch the asking price somewhere in between as a private sale.

Hi

I would recommend you contact Tom and 911 Virgin.

I think you will get the fairest dealer valuation from them.

Sounds like a beautiful car. Any pics? (of the car)

Thanks for the thoughts chaps.

A good shout regarding calling around to see what the specialists say (& yes, 911V would be on the list of folks I'd call as well as RSJ etc).

As & when I sell it, it will be to free up funds for grown up house renovation type stuff, so whatever I get as a fun car to replace it with will need to be cheap to buy (& run) ideally. I've been thinking along the lines of a lightweight something or other or maybe a 986S? I guess I'll have to ponder once the Turbo goes.

I've not got many decent pix of that car at the moment, but will sort something ASAP (not least as I'll need to create an add..).

Cheers all

Hey Mobs, I can't believe you are letting that gorgeous car of yours go

I have known Mobs for 5 years now, he is definitely not doing his car justice with the above query; put simply, it is an absolute minter, the cleanest 996T I've ever seen. I will be so sad when you sell it, mate.

You already know my thoughts, call Joel or Darren at RSJ, they are incredibly relaxed to deal with and really look after customers, old and new, so that would be my first port of call. If you sell privately, I would guess here and PCGB will be the best platforms on which to find genuine buyers.

That car of yours deserves a special home, it is far too nice to go to someone who will not cherish it. Like I've already said, so sad to see it being sold.

Mike

Rarity in numbers as a last of the 996 Turbo run car can draw a range of buyers. The mileage is good, manual car, OPC history. The Cabriolet body though is a distraction from the sort of punter after a Turbo S I'd guess.

I'd see it up on a specialist website at low £60's due to the low number of cars and driven by the things I've mentioned. This will then attract a mental discussion in a buyers head- does he buy a 996 Turbo S or put a bit more into the kitty and buy a 997 Turbo?

And therein lies the difficulty of trying to figure out what its worth. Its worth the price to a specialist collector after a low mileage 996 Turbo S. But to many people, will they buy this car (no matter how well its been kept) or go for a 997 Turbo?

Thanks for the comments again chaps. & before I place an ad anywhere, I've compiled a list of people to speak to as suggested so that I can apply a realistic valuation.

Ah, DynoMike - your comments are very kind - thank you. Mind you, your car ain't too shabby either as you're as OCD as me!
If I do get rid of it, at least you'll stop ribbing me for being scared to take it out in the rain. Or dirt...Or dust...:coat:

Cheshire911; yes, I agree with what you're saying as when I bought this one, it was indeed between the 996T & 997T. But having always had a bit of a soft spot for the 996 (I really have!), the 6TS won out in the end. Plus, as you say, it helped that there was a fairly low run on this particular one...

Anyhow, I've finally got round to taking a quick pic of the car (as the sun was out!)...

Absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys.

Don't you think these 996's just get better with age (visually)? I've had them since 2003, so I guess I'm biased.

Oh, & I'll happily admit that the reason I've not posted much on here before is that I'm a technophobe (& only post once a year on FB too!!). So, I've only just sussed out the "add photo" thingy as I had an hour or two to spare (that's a lie btw, it's taken a DAY)...

I'm still in two minds as to what's most important; grown up house stuff or cars. The saying "you can live in a car, but can't drive a house" has always stuck with me having never had a "sensible" car.

Anyhow, I may need to start a "is there a budget fun car to get into after a 911 turbo" thread...

Go steady Mobs, you may have added 0.02 miles by moving it out of the garage

If you do sell it I fear you'll miss caressing her rump with your buffing cloths..... however help is at hand, you can caress mine instead  The car that is :wack:

As usual, the car looks gorgeous. I'm guessing you must have shares in Zymol now with the amount of polishing you do :?:

Beautiful car. I feel your pain Mobs and I can sympathize with you....I have just put my cherished low mileage manual C4S for sale online for similar reasons. We have just bought a new property that needs lots doing and I cant really afford to keep it financially but also from a storage point of view it will be a pain and risk to have it around during the months of building work...The sad thing is that if I want to replace my car with a similar one later on I will most likely lose 3k or more in the process. Deeply I am hoping that I won't miss it and I won't buy another one so problem is solved...but I have a feeling that this isn't going to be the case.

As said, that's a stunning rare car you have Mobs.

Needs must though and homes come first. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a bit daft in my view but hey, we all do things our own way.

I had to sell my Mk1 GT3 CS three years ago to fund some of our renovation. I've still got the back garden left to do but we are nearly there.
I have no regrets at all. I get much more pleasure driving home to a lovely home in a beautiful area, that my wife and I have created, than I ever did from having a car sat in the garage that covered 2000 miles or so in summer.

I sold my GT3 for £42k. It's a £75k/80k car now so I doubt I'll ever have another, but like I say, my home takes priority over daft cars.

Good luck with the sale. :thumb:

Edited to add -

Another vote for 911 Virgin from me as ever. Give them a ring for a price to outright sell it to them and they may surprise you. Obviously it depends on what type of stock they are looking for that week but you never know.

I handled the sale of my mates Boxster Spyder. Tom got in touch with an offer only maybe £2k/£3k less than my mate was hoping for. I told him to snap Toms hand off as it was such a painless stress free deal.

We described the car honestly and Tom already had dealings with another friend of mine up here. Tom came up and was very happy with the car.
Money transferred and off he went.

It had to be the most no nonsense deal of a £40k car possible!
Try that with your private buyers wanting 50 thousand photos of parts of the car you didn't even know existed, then after a week of answering all their emails they say "Actually I think I want a red one, not your grey one".
Aaarrgghh.
