Exhaust tips black after rebuild - Advice

I have a 2005 997 S, in December the engine was re-built this included;

All cylinders re-lined
Pistons 6, 5 & 4 replaced
All piston rings replaced
Oil fed IMS
plus a few more odd jobs

Just last week it had a new coil pack fitted, the engine re-build was carried out in house by Portiacraft.

However I have noticed the left hand side exhaust is going black on the tips, I know this is commonly due to the bore scoring but surely not after 7 months of use and even this its minimal use, probably 1500 miles. I always make sure the car is up to temp before giving it some stick and never over rev it in 1st gear.

Unfortunately the re-build was done by the previous owner (under warranty from Portiacraft) and it's only valid for him so I cant even take it back to them.

It drives fine and I haven't noticed excessive oil use however I have only had it 4 months now. I asked a similar question on another forum and the members there thought it was running rich, if so what is the best way to rectify this? Should I get it on a rolling road and see what results come back from that?

Also just to add to the above as that was copied from Piston heads.

I have noticed when driving the car normally and steadily going up the rev range there is some slight hesitation at about 2500-300RPM, very minor and not pulling back its just not a smooth as at a different rev range. It may have been like this when I bought it and completely normal but I am cautiously looking for things now.

Here is a pic of the left exhaust tip, I cleaned it two weeks ago so this is the result from 200ish miles and two weeks. This is my second car and not used daily, usually the odd evening if the weather is nice:

They look ok to me.

Has the oil been changed after an initial running in period after the re build?

Can't see it being rich fuel mixture, it would be across all six cylinders and the o/s tips would be the same.

You can take the spark plugs out and see what they look like. Otherwise I'd be inclined to change the oil and filter using millers 10/50 nano drive.

Look perfectly normal to me. I would recommend that you drive and enjoy the car and don't read these forums.

Thanks guys.

The oil wasn't changed as far as I am aware.
Just last month when driving the car started mis-firing and ended up at a local Porsche specialist who changed the coil pack and get it back up and running.

He also checked over the plugs and oil I believe as I did ask him about their being fuel in the oil from the mis-fire but considering I only drove it about 1 mile home with the mis-fire he said it would be fine.

I think after that and only having the car a short time I was getting a bit paranoid, then when you read online about the left pipes turning black your mind goes in to overdrive!

Paranoia is a side effect of owning a gen 1 I'm afraid.

Oil consumption is the biggest sign of problems but you say that's ok.

Don't worry too much ( it's normal)

Get the oil changed asap is my opinion :thumb:

Looks fine to me too, Wouldn't worry too much.

Coking is pretty normal anyway, It's a 3.8 after all and burning a lot of fuel

Gen 2's are even worse because of the direct injection!

Thanks again, put my mind at ease a bit now.
I also got the following response from Portia craft:

They look perfectly ok plus the engine can take 5/6000 miles to settle down after a rebuild with new pistons bedding into the new liners.
Also not unusual for a bit of smoke till this happens when starting from cold as until the new rings bed into the new steel liners oil can seep down the side of the ring and get thrown out when starting.
All perfectly usual and ok so just drive it and enjoy it and don't worry.

997s in general use a litre of oil every 1000/1500 miles so again don't get concerned if you notice a bit of oil use.

Lovely in guards red mate but get that oil changed and check the filter.

It's bound to have some swarf in there after a re build.

Good luck.

Thanks, I will get that booked in ASAP.

By the looks of it the Millers 10/50 nano is the oil to go for?

If you had to get a coil pack replaced last week as you say, then presumably it was misfiring which is why the coil was replaced? The unburnt fuel from that cylinder would be exactly the same as running rich. I'd suggest you clean it, drive it and just monitor. It's unlikely to be of concern.

Yeah a full set was fitted last week as a couple were perished.

Basically last month when pulling out of a junction the EML came on and the car was juddering/mis-firing, I limped it the one mile home and then had it towed to a local specialist, long story short they ended up being a complete rip off diagnosing all sorts including 4 x valve solenoids (£1850 bill for their work). After looking online the garage are notorious for things like this so I had another Porsche specialist look at the car who said there was no clear faults showing after the new coil pack was fitted and to use the car as normal, if the problem occurred again we can then find out which valve solenoid it is and replace that rather than going through the expense of all four but he said judging by the condition of the coil packs its could have been that.

So far its been fine but I will get the oil changed as a precaution and monitor it as you say.

When using the car I always make sure its up to temp before giving it a good run and I never over rev it in 1st

Yes, millers nano 10/50 fully synthetic.

It ain't cheap but hartech recommends it and my specialist does.

Loads on here have it also.

Easy diy job :thumb:

Very sound advise from all posters , I also thought the tips looked fine, black tips from borescore is much thicker and you would also have soot all over the left side of your rear bumper.

As suggested clean it now the coilpacks etc are done and the misfire sorted.

100% change to millers nano oil 10w50 best price is opie oil who have a 10% off promo on at the moment use code SERVICE2017 at checkout

You will need 10lrs and use something like 8.5ish lts on the oil change, so buy the 2x5ltr option as its the cheapest way.
