Rear spoiler

The rear spoiler on my car when using the dash switch raises smoothly however when lowering it, half way down it tends to chatter.
I have had the drive mechanism out and the drive wheel runs free and easy, greased the fulcrum, oiled all the visible joints and it still persists.
Forgot to add, the spoiler has been removed in the past, according to previous invoices, for some remedial paintwork.
Any ideas?

Hi,

Have you had a look at the gear quadrant, are you missing a tooth or have a badly worn one?

Good luck with finding the problem.

ATB :)

Spoiler

Checked the teeth on the quadrant and they are as new, they mesh with Drive wheel perfectly.

If the teeth on the quadrant look okay, it might be the gearbox teeth - either the external drive (although major wear should be visible) or the internal one.

Remove the gearbox (just a couple of bolts - for the drive cable pull back the rubber boot from the motor, then slide out the white plastic insert to release), and mark the position of the output gear with a marker pen. Use a cordless drill on the flexi cable to turn the output gear through 180 degrees.

Refit and see how you get on...

Also see Wheeler Dealers when they did a 993 Targa, same issue.

Either way Chris, would that not affect both the raising and lowering of the spoiler?
The "chatter" only occcurs when the spoiler is about 3" from flush with the engine lid.
