Annoying little knock from front suspension. 996.1

Hi chaps.

Ever since owning the car, there has been a slight knock from the front suspension. Most common over slightly uneven surfaces or when one wheel changes height, say straddling a raised manhole even at slow speed. Exactly what I would expect from antiroll bar links.

When I did the initial overhaul I replaced the front antiroll bar links, convinced this was the fault.

Has any one changed these on a C2 (C4 are standard type)? Mine were fused into the knuckles. I ended up drilling the old ones out. 4 hour job from a 20 minute job. You can imagine my disgust when the noise was still there!!!

It's been on a ramp numerous times, even at a specialist but no play can be found.

I have ordered a set of genuine D rubbers (antiroll bar bushes where it meets the chassis). Normally I would not even consider these but I suffered for 4 years in my Subaru with a similar noise, only to replace the D rubbers, fix the noise, 1 month before selling it. Grrrrrrr.

I didn't fit genuine links so I'm not counting these out completely. Any recommendations? (Budget conscious as always with C11BRA)

Might disconnect the links & go for a drive.

Just makes the cars feel more tired than it is.

NB. You can hear & feel the knock through the floor/pedals. Very subtle, passengers don't notice.....but I do.

I've had 3 similar 'knocks on my C4. First time was a worn ball-joint in a coffin arm. 2nd was drop links and 3rd (not to bad but could just hear something) I put down to the ARB bushes. The ARBs corrode at this age and the coating flakes off. Even with new bushes I reckon you'd have some slight play there. So I removed my bushes, wrapped a few revs of insulation tape round the ARB then bushes back on and back together.

Just one other thing - nothing that can be moving in your boot is there? I once had a fire extinguisher that was tapping against something in there everytime you went over an uneven surface. Took a few days to suss out what it was.

Thanks Alex.

Yes, expecting wear on the ARB. I'll report back.

Hood is full of junk. Will remove for road test too.

The ball end of the tuning forks rattled terrible on my C4, i could'nt feel any play while they were in situ but when removed it was obvious. If they are loose they should be changed but you can pull the rubber back and fill it with grease to ptove it.

Diagonal arm knock sounds similar to link rods , if they are original then they will probably be knocking by now.

Anti roll bar bushes are again a similar noise but usually louder and more constant .

I love the junk in the boot comment Alex .. its very true and something ive over looked in the past

If you have any REALLY bumpy roads near you then see if you can record it .. diagonal become VERY apparent on really bumpy roads .

Thanks guys. Will check all these points.

Rattle

Was about to post the below, before I saw this post!

I have a weird knocking noise on the 996.2. I have had it into the garage and they diagnosed longitudinal arms, so had both replaced. On the drive home it was good, but then it returned a few days later.
You can both hear and feel it from inside the car. The feel is via pedals/floor and steering wheel.

You can only hear and feel it at speeds below about 20 MPH and only once the car has warmed up.

After a drive if I press down on the front drivers side wing I can hear the noise.

I will be taking it back in, but wondered what I could check in the meantime. I am thinking bottom arms or suspension top mounts. Any thoughts?

I bet this is inner track rods.

Mine would be fine when cold and knock when warm, felt through wheel and floor. The steering fluid heats up and changes the tolerance one the inner ball joint. Use threadlock on the thread that winds into the rack, these don't have a locking tab.

Thanks guys. I will report back.

I have the exact same scenario and have had the inner and outer track rods for about a year now.....

Easy enough to change on a driveway??

If the symptom is as wasz describes... only present when hot, or car has been driven for 30 mins etc, I can again confirm Inner track rods.

The reason no play can be felt, is that there is no play in them. As they get hot the ball joint STIFFEN'S UP causing them to start making the noise as they suddenly move over a bump.

I replaced mine recently, I put the old ones in the sunshine on a warm day after 5 mins one of them was locked tight, and very hard to move the ball joint.

Cheers

Yes but you will need either an inner track rod tool or be prepared to use Mole grips to unscrew the inner track rod and again to screw the new one in. Make sure you use threadlock as specified as our cars don't have locking tabs on them!

Its pretty easy, but you will need to pay for an alignment to set the toe again afterwards anyway.
