Hi

Looking for a C4 or C4S Manual Gearbox for my 996 - has to be a G96.31 code or face-lift model box from 2002-2005 I believe! Preferably in good working/recon order!

Thanks! :D

There will be no assurances as to the state of another gearbox or the mileage it has done. You have the cost of removal and refit of the current gearbox in your car (assuming its still in the car) in any case.

Consider the cost of likely repairs of the current gearbox versus coat of a replacement and fitting into your car. Of course if you have had catastrophic damage, then a replacement box may be the most cost-effective solution.

Yes totally agree with you, at the moment its 2nd popping out and ive had a specialist stick a used gear from a c2 box and it started rattling and possibly the bearings are making some noises, parts alone are around 1400£ so lets hope I can find a low mileage or a warrented box!

2nd gear pop-out is a common problem on 996/997 cars including GT3 and Turbo.

It is always going to be better to have your own box stripped and rebuilt with new parts and others replaced that are close to or on the wear limit to eliminate the problem for good. Cost is around £3.5k to £4.5 for a thorough and comprehensive repair - bet that is not far off a replacement box plus fitting costs.

Talk to Mike at Sports & Classic - he does a lot of these repairs and knows the issues and how to fix them.

Hi, yes near enough the cost of a new unit! Will have to figure something out as ive already paid to have a rebuilt and not paying another 2-3k on top of that!

If its a poor quality gearbox strip and rebuild and assuming its under that warranty (Mike gives a one year warranty on his gearbox strip and rebuilds) then you may have grounds for it to be done by the repairer (properly this time) under warranty.

Leaving it as-is will impact on resale value as anybody who knows these cars will test for 2nd gear pop-out. If its crunching then there will be more damage in the box for sure. Based on mileage, the pinion may be shot also (based on Mike's remarks to me when I see him rebuilding yet another gearbox).

He gets cars where someone rebuilt the box (garage) and it was done badly and it ends up at his to have it repaired properly.
