How Long Should an RMS Fix Last?

Got home last night to find an oil leak - hard to tell as I don't have ramps (M030 is low!) but I think it might be RMS again.

I paid a well regarded specialist quite a lot of money to do this 7,000 miles/2 years ago. Is it unreasonable to expect the repair to last longer than this? They're the only people to have serviced the car in my ownership.

Calling them later and want to discuss with them. Entirely possible it's not the RMS but if it turns out to be am I unreasonable to expect a discount on the repair? I'm not looking to have it done for free but the bill last time was over £500 so I didn't get it done on the cheap.

There's a chance it was the IMS cover plate as well as the RMS when you 1st had it done. It's almost impossible to tell. RMS is one of those hit and miss items that can easily fail at anytime, that's why it's best not to touch it when it's fine.

I would expect the garage to at least do you some sort of good will offer to replace it, but very much doubt they'll do it for free after 2 years.

If it were me I'd call the specialist and ask them? They're cars after all. Things work for years or they break after two weeks.

It can be awkward but a good specialist will be very happy to investigate what has happened and highlight what has happened and why. It's sometimes awkward and none of us likes to 'complain', but ultimately whenever I've raised things with the specialist who works on my cars it has been a productive conversation. I always feel I can speak to him about anything.

If you can't have the conversation with your specialist you may need a different specialist? But my humble advice would be to speak with them in the first instance? :?:

By all means share what you find here? There are some really smart and experienced mechanics on here who will keep you right*

*That ain't me....I'll help you out on the legalities and filing your small claim action if it comes to that...!

As Alex has said, it could well be the RMS again. Could be the IMS cover too.

Until you get in and have a look you won't know. Best practice is to observe it until it needs a clutch change and then get it re-done then.

RMS's can leak after a week of being replaced, or they can go on for tens of thousands of miles before there is a problem.

However, there are things (other than the above) that can cause similar leaks so it is worth having a 'no blame' discussion with your indy to make sure you're not missing an output flange leak for example.

These little leaks are definitely one of the more frustrating minor problems on those cars. :frustrated:

It's dripping enough oil to be a problem - about a drop every 5 minutes or so.

I'm not even sure it's the RMS so I'll take it to them and get their opinion first - if it is then we can chat from there, if it's not then will just need to fix it.

As you say, though, it's the little leaks which are bloody frustrating! I really go through a love/hate thing with this car. I'm tempted just to take it to the garage and say 'fix everything and don't bring it back until it's all sorted'. I mean, it's only money, right... :?:

Please don't let my wife read this....

We all know the feeling! On the upside any similar prestige car of the same year wouldn't have gone 7k miles without needing cam belts, services etc with huge costs. These are high performance, well engineered machines which are fortunately not as highly strung as its italian rivals.

Don't even get me started on the myriad of little mezger issues that you get on the GT/Turbo cars... Christ, if you think the M96/7 can spring a leak!

SHHhhh, we need to maintain the illusion that the turbo and GT3 cars are bulletproof and cost next to nothing to run.

Talking of RMS's which one is best?

I know there are a few different types about as I bought an elring bottom end gasket set and that's a fairly normal looking one but I see there.

Are any less prone to leak than another?

Went into the specialists today, verdict is that it's the oil separator that's split.

Well, I suppose that's one of the bits of the engine I've not replaced yet! :floor:

Sadly quite a pain to replace from what I've heard...

I've heard the same, but I need the event it was £363 including VAT.

To be honest I don't think that's too bad and seems to have had a positive impact in the way the car runs too.
