it was a good article, I like the tulip analogy and how people woke up one morning and realised they had traded their house for a few onion like bulbs.

The fact that so many aircooled were built is good for the price staying high, it has created a good parts and second hand market and created a good pool of mechanical knowledge to keep the cars running.

I still say there are many factors which mean that air cooled porsche prices are not in a bubble but just reflect true value:

- supply
- demand
- the fact that they are the cheapest "super car" (of their day) to run / maintain at that sort of value

To me they where undervalued 5 years ago and this has now been realigned to correct value relative to a stable market. There will always be exceptions / extremes but I really think in general the aircooled market has simply found a new level to play in.

We now at least understand the originals of the term "bags", it was not bags of cash but bags of Tulips

Enjoyed the article.

Prices for classic cars will always fluctuate but I don't see them falling anytime soon while the interest rates are so low and unlike tulip bulbs which are self perpetuating, they aren't making any more air-cooled Porsches.

Cheers,
Paul

No sour grapes, but I'm glad I'm out of it. Life is much more relaxed when you're not constantly checking how much your car is worth and how much potential profit you've made on it this month if you were to sell (another life-sapping experience). Plus it's ever so tedious talking about money.

My Cayman is only going one way - DOWN :thumb:

The end.

Kim ......... I certainly do not constantly keep on checking on 993 prices ....... in fact I really don't know how much my car is worth ......... maybe 25 bags ........ :dont know: ....... but all I know when I come to sell I will be going back to 911Virgin to seek advice ....... and I am still blowing hot and cold about selling it this year ........ I dread to keep it on the I.O.W. with all the salt air ........ decisions ...... decisions ........ I have too many of those on my plate already.

Great article and I think the author has a good point regarding the values going skywards and the ' investors' diving in ....
The problem I see is that the ' investors' are sapping the market for the enthusiast who would like to have had the air cooled experience ....

I loved the tulip analogy .... very apt ....

I have 2 bags in my garage if anyone wants to pay me £50 k for them !!

I think you will find that if you explore the value on here , then you will get a pm for a cheeky wee 30 bags offer/ future value get out deal....

More like 20. When I had mine for sale last year I was getting offers from £10k upwards.

There are many dealers lurking on here who never post, but who harass you like hell if they sniff a potential seller.

I could have written that myself. Although i would add I did buy a '69 911T for £1,300 in 1983. Knocked 'em down from 3 x monkeys :thumb:

:hand: However I do note the last para which is what I've been predicting:

So take my word for it, the market's going to crash, and if I were you I'd get out of this racket now, before you're left holding the metaphorical bag of onions.

Admittedly he relates to '78-'89 models but the analogy is there.

964 Anniversary in Polar Silver 75 bags, anyone :dont know: No swaps for tulip bulbs etc

It may come to be that 25 bags is incredibly generous, don't rule it out, I bought high, and knew it, but these cars don't inspire rational thinking, would I be devastated if it halved or worse, no, I am only having one and once its gone, I wont be going through the range like many do, I love the thing and in my mind I have had good value already, and if it stays price stable then that's ok aswell.

Good article. I do wonder about the stories I hear about x-many UK 911's (old and new) finding new homes in Australia/Asia/China. If that is the case then it really is a case of supply and demand. If there were 10 last year and this year 3 go abroad then this year there will be 7... year after 4 go... then the 3 left will be worth a lot more... nice analogy with the tulips but not a good comparison between cars and flowers. The latter supply can increase, the former can't. If Porsche started rebuilding old stock in unlimited numbers, then yes that would probably cause the market for these cars to crash. Me personally, I'd rather spend £100k on a brand new 'old' car with warranty etc if I could, than an old original with all the potential pitfalls that would entail
