problems with front number plate holder

For many moons now, my front number plate has really only been held on by one fastener... The plastic clip thing that left hand screw goes into simply pops out too easily. i guess its the square hole in the PU that is not a precise as it would have been from new and/or the the expanding plastic nut thing is simply no good.

Can anyone advise of a better or alternative way to keep the thing locked onto the PU?

I'd really rather sort it before the Jolly Boys Outing...
