Ignition coils and heat shield

Had a major service yesterday and my mechanic told me I'd need new ignition coils and the heat shield (x2) that covers them.

I'm hoping these are the correct items but confirmation from anyone here will be very helpful. I have a 2004 996 C4S tip, coupe.

Part 37 on the diagram.

I'm also aware of the 5% discount I can apply on this website with the code "911uk09", if anyone else is interested.

Thanks in advance.

Yes that all looks good to me.

Bear in mind the design of the ign coils has now changed (if D911 send you a batch from new stock) and their heads are totally incased in plastic (which may stop the water ingress failure issues long term) so u might need to bend or offset the heat shield very slightly (in the order of 5mm) to give clearance.

All will become apparent when fitting

Thanks Harv, much appreciated.

Check out ecp price for the coil pack's as they are beru new design as well.

Confirm the price by applying the discount code and get design911 to price match.

Good tip, thanks!

you might want to check out Alternative Car Parts for the coil covers as the chap there told me that they have started making the coil covers in a material that wont rot like the oem ones so you only have to buy once not every time you drive down a salted road. I haven't purchased these yet myself but i will next time i need them and if you give them a ring they are very helpful over the phone.

there was also a post a few weeks back for surefire coil packs as well and it suggested that they gave better performance than the oem ones so you might want to check them out as well as another option

Can't see the point of the heat shields. Without them, the exhausts keep the coil packs warm so they don't get moisture in them :dont know:

Thanks for further ideas.

I guess, because I'll be selling soon, I'd rather go with the standard BERU coils. I say this as others mentioned are possibly subject to discussion (whether they really are good or not). I don't have a consensus opinion on the alternatives. If a bunch of fellow 911uker's swear on an alternative, I'll buy them instead, especially if they're cheaper :)

As for the shields, I'd rather put them on and if someone has the same opinion as Alex and they buy my car, they can just unscrew them off :D

Bottom line, I'm just trying to fix the things my mechanic told me are imminent to fix in the most standard way.

If I'm wrong with my reasoning, please correct me and guide me along a cheaper path!!

Fair enough, you might want to check prices with your local Porsche Dealer then as they are normally cheaper and will deliver for free. Its worth a call and if you say you are a forum member they should give you 10% discount

Thanks for that, I'll give them a buzz tomorrow.
Can update this thread if I get a positive outcome from OPC.

Update

Called OPC Cambridge just now. Ignition coils were over 300 quid so I respectfully declined those! The heat shields plus bolts, all in with forum discount, came to £31.50. I took those.

ECP (current SALE30 discount) has 6 Beru coils at £163.76. Sounds like the cheapest around that I could find.

Last August an OPC quoted £530 to replace all 6 coils on my 997 GEN1 so £300 for parts sounds about right.

I've found that it can be cost effective to mix-and-match using OPC.

Sometimes, parts I've bought in the past from OPC couldn't be bettered elsewhere. I also had a recent gearbox oil change from them where their price stacked up well against my usual indie specialist.

When I can get coils for half the price OPC are quoting, I'll go elsewhere!

My Indy agrees just completed a major service he said the coil covers were corroded so removed them he said that's fine

My car hasn't got any at the mo, removed or fell off prior to my ownership. Indy said they were needed as without them the extremes of the coil packs getting too hot then cooling casuses the cracking, mine are all cracked.

Pick which ever Indy advice suits you 😋
