Does anybody know anything about Litronic lights on a 99 996 please?
Mine were fitted as standard.
It has had a Porsche supplied, specialist fitted M30 kit - I have the paperwork in the history file for all this.
They seem ok-ish, but a couple of times it's as if they've suddelenly become much brighter whilst driving.
I'm fairly sure I remember it doing the self levelling sequence, but it's not doing it now.
When I start the car it always turns over very lazily. It's never not started and the battery has never got weaker trying to start even when it's been left for 3 weeks when I was on holiday.
I have just had the front bumper and wings sprayed, so I imagine the headlights would have been removed for that.
Sorry for the mammoth post. Any thoughts welcome. 8)

As far as i know, the Litronic system doesn't have a self-levelling system?

The lights are very easy to remove, there's a tool supplied in the kit. Remove the unit and spray some contact cleaner on the contacts (not excessive though!)

There's a battery strap that can cause slow cranking, if memory serves.. A forum search should bring up something though.

I wondered about an Earth strap maybe causing a problem. I have done some searching and there's mention of two sensors, one on the front and rear suspension arms to control the height adjustment. I know on my old M3 there was something similar to this. I've also read there is an extra cable that needs plugging in separately to the slide in plug when refitting the unit. And there is a control unit that can go into 'safe mode' and centralises the beam if something fails. The M3 pointed straight down at the floor of the sensor arm broke. The handbook says to turn the headlights on, then turn the ignition on and the lights should go through the self levelling test procedure.
Apart from the last bit in the handbook there's not that much about the rest, nothing conclusive.

I'm about to take the wheels off my 01 with litronics. I'll take a look. Pretty sure there are level sensors.

mines a later 996.1 but they definately self level

+1 self-level

The clues will be:

1) no manual leveller dial next to light switch (you can probably stop there)
2) leveller control box behind drivers side headlamp in wing
3) leveller sensors on front suspension struts

Inconsistent light output is probably ballast or bulb failure (wear and tear)

Thanks.
Mine hasn't got the manual adjuster next to the light switch.
Grifter: if you could take a couple of pics that would be great, thanks.

Thanks for that GT4.
Is there only the front sensor on mine? I had read about another on the back, or is that later cars maybe.

AFAIK 996.1 are all front only (but I may have been thinking of Boxster)

According to that PET all 996 have both F and R sensors where M601 optioned.

(technically from MY99, but that is just Litronic introduction date)

Are you looking to fix/retrofit or just identify?

Why on earth was I under the impression that there weren't any self-levelers?!?! :frustrated:

Is there a way to test the functionality? Mine certainly don't adjust when first turned on :( (as the seem to in other cars)

GT4: mine aren't working properly so just trying to see the exact scale and where I'm going to have to start checking first.

OK

Good luck!

But just to point out, if you can't fix (don't wish to fix), they aren't legally required on the 911 (amongst others).

And in any case, levellers only assess adjustments at the point of initial lamp operation.

So for the rest of the journey they are static anyway.

Unless you often carry a dozen bags of cement in the rear "boot" area, it won't even be an issue to other road users.
