Cabriolet rear screen replacement? 2001 996

Does anyone on here have any experience with replacing the rear plastic screen on a 996 cabriolet?

After 16 years mine is coming to the end of its life and I'd like to replace it to keep the car looking great.

I've double checked and it definitely is a zip in type screen, so looks like it's made to be replaced independently of the hood, which is in good condition.

I can't find any OEM replacement screens, but aftermarket ones are available in the US at least:

http://www.emiata.com/996Window.htm

The fitting instructions aren't exactly clear though (particularly about unsealing the old screen and resealing the new one) and there are mixed reviews on them.

I basically want to do the job once and do it right, but obviously don't want to waste money if there's a reasonably priced option available.

So, any advice gratefully received! :thumb:

You can restore them but it takes time to do it properly - mine was pretty poor when I bought the car but with a polishing kit, electric drill, time and effort the window came up really well not as new but good enough to see through clearly.

So, I've found a few shops around the country that will do the replacement plastic and even heated glass in some cases, so I thought I'd save any other members who are looking for the same some time and list them here:

Surrey: http://www.carhood.com/porsche/

Coventry: http://www.softtops.org.uk/rear-screens.htm

Liverpool: http://www.kbaggstrimming.co.uk/Hoods_Main/Rear_Window/

Cost for the plastic window replacement ranges from £250 to £500 fitted.

My car is booked in at the Car Hood Warehouse on Friday as they get good reviews and are reasonably local.

I'll post up my thoughts once the work has been done. :thumb:

To add: I had an email back from K Baggs, they won't replace the plastic screen as in their experience it will leak, they'll replace the entire hood with a new one that contains a heated glass screen, cost of this is £999 plus VAT.

It's a same day procedure, I've asked if they match the Porsche colours (my hood is Metropol Blue rather than black).

I had a new blue hood fitted a few months back, my glass was shot so I decided to go for a whole new roof rather than just glass. I had a company called Custom Hood Kings (Hoods county customs) overhaul the mechanism and put on a new roof. It was £1050 but worth every penny.

I think the new window was 350 and although it is part zipped you cannot just zip a new one in. Any new window will need to be stitched so would require the fabric to come off. I was quoted 450 to replace just the window.

I am super happy with my new roof :)

Just to add that the hood alone was £699 with a plastic window.

Good man. Are you going for glass or plastic?

Plastic, wanted to keep it as original as possible. :thumb:

How does the blue compare, hue wise?

It is perfect one sec i have some before and after pics:

Mine was really faded and ruined before, this matches colour wise to the trim pieces and flaps in the rear of the car. The roof mechanism was also overhauled greased and filled with fluid as part of the job. Its now perfectly smooth and quiet in operation :)

These are the guys that did mine, a tiny outfit that I found in a random industrial estate up the road: http://hoodsgaloreuk.co.uk/

That does look good, the plastic windows are a LOT larger than the glass ones.

I believe that's because the plastic ones fold in the middle when stowed whereas the glass ones obviously can't.

One of the reasons I'm opting for plastic.

Yep, 100% with you there, and if I could see through the mass of swirls which my plastic window has become over the years I'd be keeping it.

I'll have a crack at polishing them all out, if that fails I may pay a visit to the guys you used.
