Am I crazy? 997 turbo question...

Hi all,

I currently own a 997 turbo (gen '1.5"), which I bought about 6 months ago.

There is no doubt that this is a sensational car, but I'm looking for some advice on this (perhaps crazy) question.

I am starting to miss my old 997.1 C2S (manual), which I had for 3.5 years before swapping it for the turbo (tip). When I first drove the turbo I was in no doubt that it was the right move. But a few months in, I don't think I've bonded with it as much as I did with the last one.

To me it doesn't sound as good, on start-up, or under acceleration. I miss the manual gearbox (I couldn't stretch to a manual turbo...). I find the tiptronic buttons a bit fiddly. Other than that, the driving experience feels almost too 'perfect', if that's possible.

Would it be crazy to consider getting a 997 gen II manual instead? Would this represent a stupid waste of money (paying dealer premiums on two 911s in 6 months)?

Basically I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever felt slightly disappointed by the turbo and changed it, or whether there's a cure for this bizarre situation.

Cheers!
A

I can empathise with your feelings in that I'd never buy another Turbo because 90% of the time it is just too much for UK driving

BUT

All the time I'm able to get to the fatherland a couple of times a year I'll revel in the fact that whilst I can drive my Turbo like a Carrera I'd never be able to drive a Carrera like my Turbo.

I've had Tips for over 6 years - always by choice - and the only thing I'd change it for would be PDK.

Lack of noise isn't an issue for me. I like the stealth mode. Most times when I travel it's with loud cars so I can always open my window - especially in tunnels etc.

i totally get this, i have toyed with the thought of a turbo many times but on the roads i drive on i struggle to push my N/A 3.8 over 3000RPMs, also due to the fact i can use my N/A 997 all year round and not need to worry about where i park it or putting miles on i decided against the turbo, and one of the extra benefits is the exhaust sound - so i am with you on this one
if i was tracking it or going across europe to enjoy the turbo properly then that would be different story....maybe when/if i retire!!!!!

Yup, I can understand. Been contemplating a turbo myself but my c2s is so fulfilling with n/a noise and manual gearbox, I'd think I'd miss it.

How about a GTS  ?

You travelled a long way by going from a C2S manual to a turbo tip! The market loves the 1.5, obviously it loves a manual 1.5 even more, but many a specialist would love to have your Turbo in exchange for a gen 2 C2S manual

You're not crazy.
Some people (like me) just don't like the modern turbo power deliveries and lack of noise. However saying that, the 997.2 S has lots of torque and is too quiet as standard so I would definitely be testing one before making the move!

Owning these cars is a lot about how they make you feel in them, as well as how they perform.
With my manual 997.1 C4S, with PSE, and on UK roads, it works for me in ways I think that a turbo doesn't. I can get sufficient "umph" and feeling of power without the need for the turbo and my driving skill and the straight road runs out long before the power and magnificent noise.
Go with your heart , make the choice.

I've just come back to this and re-read your original post again.

In your position I'd hang fire for another six months and use the time to study what 991 prices are doing. They're already into the low £50ks.

You may find that by then the cost to change will be more palatable and you'll have the benefit of being in a current model rather than your third 997.

:agree: wise words

Change the exhaust

I put a Europipe on mine about 6 months after I bought it.

It changes the driving experience. Stealth mode is fine, but sometimes you just want to turn a few heads 8)

Put a Kline exhaust on it and you will get the sound you are looking for.

turbo noise

I got a Gen 1 997 Turbo manual and put a Milltec exhaust on which lifted the noise level and now it sounds quite useful and seems to go better too

Have you done many miles in the Turbo?

I was in exactly the same position 996 C4S manual to 997 turbo Tip in May

And got to say initially wasn't sure, but have changed the Tip wheel to have the pdk paddles and now drive in manual mode alot more (the Tip box does take some getting used to) , but just knocking it back to 1st at junctions/lights etc. whenever you are pulling away makes a world of difference.

The rest of the time I think the Tip box is great through the gears, and means you've both hands on the wheel when all hell breaks loose.

Upgraded ARB, fresh geo and Kline exhaust 100 cell and I have it how I want it.

I'd say give it a bit longer - perhaps get a European blast under your belt.

And of course the elephant in the room - you won't be worrying about the M96/97 engine issues - I know it was a consideration for me (10 years of getting away without it going bang felt I was riding my luck)

It must be catching, changed from 2006 997 4S man to 09 plate 1.5 turbo tip in august. I love the tip box but I'm changing the wheel and exhaust to make it even better. I love it that much it's made me an enthusiast again!! The 4s just became a daily driver and for me it's all about how special the marque is!!

Give it time :thumb:
