Falling back in love with my Turbo...

I recently got a very serious itch for a new turbo which led me to scour the adverts for hours on end looking for the perfect car which would scratch that itch.

After hours of reflection, drafting and re-drafting adverts to sell my car it struck me that I would effectively be compromising on something no matter what type of 911 turbo I went for. Whilst the 997's may be newer and may (depending on your viewpoint) be a slight improvement on most areas over the 996, I couldn't find a car which had exactly what I wanted. The only one which comes close is an ES750 car at Redline in Yorkshire at £80+k. That would mean an outlay of at least another £40k on top of my car to get something similar/better than mine in terms of performance and braking, but still be a compromise in other areas such as the way the rear end looks, the mondeo interior, and the average in car entertainment. I have also been re-inspired by the amazing things people (Tom & FRP) are doing to their cars.

Based on this, it surely is the sensible thing to do to look again at what I've already got and re-acquaint myself with it. I'd not even washed it for months so I took todays mild weather as a 'sign' and got out there and gave the old girl (and her sister) a good scrub - with suds and everything!

I often think that giving a car a good clean is a great way to get to know it well. Going over mine with its immaculate bodywork, lovely 380mm front rotors which you don't often find on 996's, sitting just right on 997 wheels (which I personally love) and flowing lines has reminded me just how much I love this car!

My accountant has also been very nice to me this month so I may even get the tip box removed and sent to Germany for upgrading ready for a new round of power mods. I still need to get out there and give her a good blast but need to wait for the salt to be washed away before I do this.

Its safe to say that my search for another 911 is on hold. For now...

Guys (you know who you are), thanks for helping me see sense!

The 996 Turbo is awesome. I prefer the looks of it to the 997, much more beefed out and aggressive looking.

I think you've made the right decision for you.

Now ........

.... turn your attention to this ==> The 'must do' event for 2017

Yes!!! Good man Rags, a sexy rear always tugs at the heart strings

As for your car post-wash

Can't wait to see what happens to it in the next round of mods, but reckon that FRP and Tom may have some company sometime soon

Sounds like the right decision - the '6 is an amazing machine. If there was less prejudice towards higher mileages I'd still have mine  :cloud9:

Though what's with all this only driving in summer malarkey? I've always thought the reason cars end up with salt caked is because owners only drive them during dry days during winter months? If you drive them on wet days too then 40 miles during a deluge soon washes any surface salt away. Then a good power wash regularly and bob's yer uncle :dont know:

My last two cars were used year round and the undersides on each looked no different to occasional use or younger cars. Mind you the oil leaks (now rectified of course) in the turbo probably helped too! Now please tell me you're going to drive it more?

Mind you I'm a 996 boy through and through. If I owned a risk-of-rot 993 I might be more circumspect

Interesting visual comparison. Agree the 996 turbo is far better looking than the 997 - maybe the 996 is coming out of that unloved period like the 964 had? 997 looks a bit gash to me, especially with those awful wheels.

Isnt that a 996 GT2 pic against a standard 997 pic? :dont know:

From that angle I've always preferred the looks of the 996 too.

Of course it helps that the one shown is actually a GT2.

To be totally transparent regarding the photo comparison, the 996 photo is a GT2 not a turbo, but I personally think the 996T looks better in side profile (as does T8 I believe).

Either variant would be amazing to own though, after all, it is a Porsche.

Beat me to it Terry!

They had to do that to even it up, I'd say 997 is better in the flesh

Good decision,,,,you can always change when your mindset decides so!!!

Phew another 996 owner holding fire for the time being!!! What with Paul and a few others going to the 997 crew as of late, it was a worrying trend

997 maybe an improvement but i have not experieced anything like my car as of yet and have only been a passenger in a 997 for a brief high speed run ie no road exposure

I gain a lot of pleasure from cleaning my car...its filthy at the moment and out for a A B road run out to Felixstow docks tomorrow to clock up some miles or at least 250 or so. See if i can get a video of the beast up,,,but with SHMBO who does not like the speed!

Regards
