Ticking/Clanking noise

Hi all - started my 997.2 up this morning, and noticed a new Noise...

On Idle and when driving there is a ticking/Clanking noise...

Not sure if it is related to the cold but after 20 mins driving it was still there.

Ticking noise is constant, twice a second on idle or so

I am wondering if it is belt related...
My simple question is if so.ething like this is common and or means I shouldn't drive the car prior to going to a machanic - my normal guy is on holiday for a couple of weeks

Oh dear, sorryto hear, but at least it's a gen 2.
If in any doubt, don't drive it but get it recovered to your chap for when he's back in.

Hard to guess from the description, could be a chain tensioner but many other possibilities.
Does it vary with engine revs? More noticeable cold or hot? Has the car been sat about for some time?
Guess you've already checked oil level?
Good luck.

Can you post a sound clip of the noise ?

Is the noise louder from one side of the car than the other .. tappets im thinking ?

Is the noise from the rear end of the engine .. the crank pully side ?

If so a possible seized tensioner and depending on how bad might not be good .

To check that you need the air box out and a large spanner on it .. be worth pulling the belt and checking the other pullys whilst there but a ticking noise is not normal for a pully .

Has the car been standing for a while ?

Why would it matter if the car had been sitting for a while?
What would you be thinking if it had?

After sitting idle fora while they tend to be noisy until the oil has managed to get around when it is nice and warm and coats things again.
Think about it not good as that is why my car gets warmed up on a regular basis when in hibernation.

How often is a regular basis ?
And when you say warmed up do you mean just left running?
Does this assure oil is pumped to all appropriate places or does it have to be driven?

Budgie, no longer than sat idle for 2 weeks usually driven as long as the roads are not coated full of salt, if sat in the garage idling it will get taken up to around 3k in revs once warmed up, I have had the noisy ticking once after standing idle for around a month took a good 15 minute warm up to disappear.
My advice is to run them on a regular, I do the same with my 944 Turbo, though you can whip the DME relay out on that and just crank it over to get oil pressure without it starting, but that said it also gets a run and see's lots of revs once warm ( it is running circa 320 bhp) :hand:

Some good comments.. I ran the car for 20 mins or so and no change but I didn't drive it hard and it barely got up to temp...

My specialist is away till the 9th. I will try to get a recording tomorrow.

My feeling is either tappets or something with a belt...

Thanks guys so far.

Forgot to mention I run 5/40W oil in my 997 may have some bearing on things.

Sounds like a camshaft knock. Maybe dermot can identify it, variocam issue maybe but I wouldn't drive it in case you cause major damage :

Good luck anyway.

Tappets tend to be a higher tone , a deeper tone indicates bigger problems basically .

That does sound more like a tappet to me , i assume you were under the car recording and moveing around a bit as the sound seems to move .

Ok so 2 ways forward ..as after all i cant see the car or " feel " it ..

1/ get it recovered to a garage and get them to check it just in case .

2/ give it a good drive so it gets upto full temp .. then a little more driving and see if that cures it , it may or may not but if its a tappet that will usually stop it or at least make it a lot quieter .

Up to you how you procede im afraid , it feels to me like a tappet but im just a post on a forum at the end of the day .. if you are not happy then i would advise no.1 .

So...

I drove the car to a Porsche Main dealer in here in Germany...

I need a new engine. cylinder bore completely shot.

So what do you guys reckon - I am going to push porsche to provide a free engine/subsidise. My warranty ran out 3 months ago.

I specifically bought a PDK car to ensure I didn't have this damned problem. then I get the same issue.

car is a 2009 42 PDK with 110K KM.

Am not happy to say the least.
