Hi Guys,

Been too busy with work to drive much.....probably been 3-4 weeks..

Long story short...the 996 C2 manual seemed fine...I warmed her up and then started to put my foot down a little and the check/engine management light came on and the car was hesitating.

Sort of like intermittent hunting and no power. Below 2500 rpm, driving gently it was fine but as soon as you put your foot down the power was not there, it sounds like it is firing on 4-5 cyclinders.

Anyway, drove back home.......Took the 996 Turbo S out and all in all was a good day!! LOL !!

So does this sound like a coil pack? Or something else??

I'm super busy over the holiday period, so the car may have to sit in the garage all warm and snug!!

I know, I know....they like to be driven....case in point!

HELP

Sounds similar to when my coil packs went so hopefully it is just that

Could made worse by wet electrics at this time of year. Did it clear up as the car heated up and dried out?

Mine has done that. I'm fitting new coil packs but not until after the holidays now.

The car is kept in a fully insulated heated garage.

If you can get the back of the car up in the air the coil packs on the 996.1 C2 are a piece of cake to remove. So I would just pull them and inspect them. If you have a code reader plug that in first to give you pointers.

Are coil packs expensive?

Should I replace just the one or two....or all kf them??

Just over £100 a set from ECP. I would check first though.

Replace them all if it is that as you can bet the rest won't be far behind

Bosch set at ecp is over £240....where are they for £100??
Iceboy

early/late cars have different coil packs, don't know why.

With ECP, firstly look at their sale codes (30% off is typical). They will also price match if you find them cheaper elsewhere.

Look at Design911 and others for prices. I bought Beru on Wed for my 996.2 car for £136. I think Beru are OEM too.

Read other threads about bolt lengths, they come with the packs but original bolts are shorter and use female TORX, later ones are longer with male TORX - I'll need some sockets. Apparently the coil cover needs a bit of adjustment with a hammer too!

With my car firing on what seems 4-5 cylinders...do I need to get it lifted to a local specialist or can it be driven gently for 5 miles?

Coils or misfires tend to be more obvious at idle or there abouts , you say its ok then so i would lean towards something like a MAF or a fuel pump / pressure problem .

fault code check is the first thing .. no codes would indicate a fuel pressure fault .. a maf i feel would flag up a code in this sort of instance.

Misfires would again be flagged but that doesn,t alwsays mean its coils im afraid .

Reguards recovery then i always say the same thing .. recover .. sorry :)

Sounds funny at idle too!
Lol

Ok .. well .. at idle with x1 coil out then the car would noticably shake .. exhaust note would also sound different.

With x2 coils out on tickover then you would be thinking i need to turn this off now as it feels REALLY bad lol

Either way a fault code check will soon tell you if its just plugs / coils :)

A fault code reader, a pair of axle stands, a jack, and a small socket set will cost less than getting it taken anywhere.
