Going to see a 997 tomorrow

Hi

I'm new to the forum and am going to look at a 2007 997 CS with only 52k on it in the morning :) The 911 has always been the car of my dreams and it's hopefully going to be a dream come true this side of xmas. I've got a deal in principle without viewing but I've noticed that it needs 4 new tyres as perr the MOT 3 months ago. It's had a full rebuild by hartech but I wondered if I need the bores checking again? I'll admit I know nothing about 911's as I've had vw's since I started driving.

There'll be a fight for the garage between the 997 and my pride and joy which is a mk4 Golf R32 which I've spent thousands on and will never part with. Might not be to everyone's taste but I absolutely love it 😍

Some ground work needs to be done when buying a car with an engine rebuild. Sometimes when they've had scored bores (or just one bore), only they have been sorted with new liners, etc. and some of the other bores will be the originals.
My opinion - either find out exactly what's been done and why or (and) get a bore-scope done.

Nice Golf :thumb:

Would not hurt to have the bores checked but if its a full Hartech rebuild then you should be pretty safe! Maybe it still has warranty?

You will soon be robbing bits off your R32 to fund shiny things for the 911 :D

Good luck!

Thanks :thumb: I've gone as far as I can go with the golf now so no doubt the 911 will be getting some additions. My other half is beside herself.

Okay, I'll calm myself down and do the necessary checks as I don't want to jump in with both feet. Will call hartech tomorrow morning and see what they can tell me about what was done and why. I don't feel too comfortable with all this bore business and most sellers who haven't had rebuilds say it's a load of rubbish and exaggerated. Has anyone got a link to a buyers guide? I've been trying to find one on here, it'll probably be in a really obvious place!

The car has had bores, 4,5 & 6 done.

Here's a snippet from the advertisement

bought for £28,000 from Williams BMW of Bolton 2 yrs ago and nearly £8000 spent on the usual Porsche engine scoring (4,5,6) rebuilt by Porsche 911 specialists - Hartech Racing of Bolton - bills to show (LINERS, PISTONS, VALVES, ETC ETC). This engine is now better than when it left the Porsche factory. Interior unmarked black leather, rear windscreen wiper, unmarked alloys - immaculate inside & out. I need an automatic so realistically priced to sell. Basalt Black.

Otherwise known as bank 2 - always the side that gets the scored bores (due to the design of the cooling system on the engine). It's good to know all three cylinders on that bank have been done :thumb:

Oh that's great, I was beginning to think it'd only had half a job. I haven't had much luck with cars so there's a degree of anxiety with this purchase.

I've had problems registering on the forum for the last few weeks and only got access tonight so I appreciate all the responses to my last minute concerns :thumb:

Hmmm, that is a little ambiguous as an advert. I wouldn`t have thought that Hartech would have replaced one bank of liners and not the others as this could cause a difference in friction/balance of the engine :?:

I would speak to Hartech to confirm the work that has been done, or at least study the bill for the work carried out :thumb:

£8K, at that time, sort of suggests that the whole engine was refurbished properly with a full set of liners.

Yeah the advert is a bit vague.. I'm a bit wary as it's being offered at 23k for an 07 plate with 52k so it is very reasonable. It's in Lancashire which is ideal for me as that's where I'm based. I'll be on to hartech first thing, there was 18 months between mots 10/02/15 and 18/08/16 so it's might have happened then :?:

I`m sure Baz at Hartech will confirm everything that has been carried out during the rebuild, and afterall, Hartech are the people to go to for a rebuild :thumb:

Make sure that you check over the rest of the car Lee, don`t focus on the engine alone, lots of little faults add up to a big bill if you aren`t careful
:thumb:

A set of tyres is going to cost you £700+

Do the checks and it may be a candidate

Hi,
As others have said Hartech will have records of what work was done to the vehicle. I agree with the other comments that 8K sounds more like a full rebuild than just one bank. They have a good reputation and all things being equal if the paperwork checks out the engine 'should' be sound - how long ago and miles covered since the work was done?

Other more general checks would be the water coolant system - signs of leakage, or chalking around the filler cap, check it is filled up and a nice pink colour.
Suspension and linkage could be showing its age so listen out for any slight slow speed 'knocks' when going over bumps. They would be Bilstein gas filled on standard so will not show any leakage but the drive may show any weaknesses.
Exhaust system can be checked out without a ramp, see if it is original and check the seams around the silencers, and the connection clamp bolts on the exhaust system so take a torch. If you are feeling enthusiastic lie down and shine the torch to have a look at the manifold bolts. you should also be able to see the heat shields from under there.
Again using the torch have a look into the front grills at the radiators. Air con and coolant radiators are there with the air con in front and are exposed and hoover up road leaves and crap. A decent owner will have cleared them out. If they are on their way out there will be dark staining on them showing possible leaks. Run the air con to check it goes cold - not just cool.
Do check all the carpets and bottoms of the door panels and behind the rear seats for any signs of water ingress.
Drivers seat bolsters can take a beating if the owner but with careful ownership they should still be looking nice - can look tatty if worn out but can be replaced - at a price.
Look at the front headlights for any signs of 'hazing' due to exposure to the sun. Can make the front end look old but can be detailed back. Replacements are very expensive so check them carefully.

Have a look for the alignment of the vehicle panel gaps and check the rear bumper carefully to see if any other 'nice' drivers may have parked too close. It will show as a hairline crack in the paint high up and arced across the rear bumper.

Other than that it is standard fair, checking wear left on consumable items such as brakes discs all the electric buttons and gizmos operate correctly etc. The car may have had a nose respary due to stone chipping but thats ok so long as it is to a high standard.

Pay the £10 or whatever it costs for a good quality vehicle check prior to viewing it can show up any previous accident or Insurance claim history - not always 100% but a tenner well spent.

Enjoy the viewing and take your time. Read a book on giving the car a slow walk around using your head and evaluating whether the car warrants further viewing or walking away.
Finally, go over ALL the paperwork first before the detailed inspection. It may prompt you to look for certain things or ask probing questions. If you do it the other way around you may be more inclined to skin the paperwork and receipts being smitten by the car.

Not in any way suggesting that you would not have done some or all of the aboove but I looked at quite a few before settling on the one I have.
Regards
Glen Wells

£8k will be for just one bank at a guess. No doubt it'll have had some other work done as well, like replacing the odd worn part and upgrading the ims bearing. Nobody is going to state in an advert it's only had bank 2 done when both have.

All prices are here: https://www.hartech.org/rebuild-prices

ps. Hartech's new website is great and will teach you all you need to know about the M97 (and others) engine: https://www.hartech.org/

pps. I wouldn't count on Hartech telling you what work has been done if you're not the current owner.

Good luck with the purchase & remember.......we're all here to help :thumb:

Wow some really informative replies here, I really appreciate it.

I've done some enquiries with hartech, it was a bit like getting blood out of a stone... They confirmed only bank 2 had been done and it was about 18 months ago, he said the car pretty much had the basics as the guy only did low miles.. in other words it had just enough to get the car back on the road, it could've had more but I needed to put myself in the sellers position being landed with a big enough bill as it was and it shouldn't put a downer on the car at all. I then got a little lecture about having enough money to maintain it as most people can just about afford one and not have the money for maintenance. He confirmed that the IMS was upgraded from factory with it being an 07 plate.

Ill shorty be going to see it, I wish i had the knowledge I have on the R32 on the 997 :nooo:
