Not reving past 4500 when engine up to temperature

Hi,

Just new as bought my first Porsche yesterday. I have a 2003 996 3.6 tiptronic C2. Car has 150k on it. The car after it gets up to temperature is down on power and won't rev past 4500. There are no warning lights or any indication there is an issue. For first 10-20 minutes car seems great. It also seems there is a slight misfire. Can anyone help or have experienced this before?

Sounds like 1 or maybe more of your coil packs are on there way out, which would also cause the misfire !

So you didn`t get the car up to temperature on the test drive(s) :dont know:
Neither did you get it inspected to identify any faults before purchase :dont know:

I would have thought a missfire would throw an EML to illuminate :dont know:

Buy a cheap OBDII code reader and see what it says :thumb:
 
coil packs.

do the spark plugs at same time if you can. a cheapish thing to do once you have gone through all the hassle with coil packs.

From previous experience of hearing about such issues I suspect (and hope) that this would resolve your problems but as I'm a complete DIY duffer I'd actually get the car into a Porsche specialist and get it diagnosed properly asap.

The reason I mentioned spark plugs above was that I had a similar issue on a road trip and whilst on the Autobahn everyone else headed off at Autobahn speeds and because I had a single spark plug problem (found out when I returned home) my car was maxed out at 107mph. I'm not sure what the revs were at this speed but it acted as a rev limiter, I got no fault codes (checked it at a Belgium services) or CEL.
 
blocked or collapsed catalytic convertor ...get a cat back pressure test done
 
Alternator 996 C2 3.6

Hi,

Yesterday after washing the car then putting it back in garage my alternator started to smoke quite badly with ignition off. Had to quickly disconnect battery before it developed further. Once smoke had cleared I reconnected battery, still ignition off, and again smoke started from alternator. Question is, should alternator have a permanent supply to it? Can't understand why it would and would have thought it would be switched via ignition? Alternator now removed for repair/replacement as don't trust it now.

Most of the alternator wiring will be unswitched. Probably just one cable with a switched live.
