Hi After completing a round trip of 270 trouble free motoring yesterday until I arrived home when I selected reverse and parked. Before I turned the engine off I noticed the 4th gear and "D" light flash between each other. This morning I drove the car about half a mile and I noticed that whenI selected reverse it clonked slightly and the manual tiptronic would not work!
Any ideas and help please? The car has covered 85,000 miles.
Thanks

The manual says:
If there is a fault in the transmission:
- 4th gear flashes on the display.
- The warning "Tiptronic emergency run"
appears in the on-board computer.
Also refer to "Emergency program".

To remedy the fault, please consult an authorized
Porsche dealer immediately.

So I suggest a visit to somewhere that can read the codes might be in order! The 996.2 tip has a "limp home" mode - check your manual:

Proceed as follows in the event of a transmission
fault:
1. Stop in a safe place.
2. Move selector lever to position P, switch the
ignition off and wait for 10 seconds.
3. Start the engine.
2nd gear in selector position D and reverse
gear R are now available and will allow you to
reach the nearest authorized Porsche dealer.
4. To remedy the fault, please consult an authorized
Porsche dealer immediately.

The first thing I would do is change the oil and filter.

Mine always conks into reverse and its had oil and filter. 100k car though.

Thanks for your replies and help. My 996 is a first generation and does not have a computer read out. I have just ordered a new tiptronic gasket and filter which hopefully will arrive mid next week from my nearest Porsche dealer (approx 130 miles away).
Has anyone have an idea as to why these lights are flashing and as to why the tiptronic isnt working?

Has anybody got any ideas ref this issue? It's gone very quiet!,
Thanks in advance

Usually Demort would have chipped in by now and as a Porsche tech he would offer some ideas , but he's on hols at the moment with intermittent internet so hes not as active on here as usual ,So I suggest sending him a PM with a link to this thread and I am sure he will offer some pearls etc. :thumb:

re zen ben's comment about clunks mine did the same until I fitted a
"function first transmission mount insert" even if you went with the softest one, it would remove the sag in the transmission mount and give you cleaner, quicker gear change and maximise the clunk into gear when cold or reverse etc.

Cheers Phil .. back now :)

Just about everything has been already covered ..

Theres a fault which has caused the tip to go into limp home mode , first thing to do is always read out the fault codes it can be numerous things causeing it .

Box oil and filter change is always a good idear and can often cure box faults but without reading the codes first is just a guess at a fix as its possible its not even the box thats at fault .

Once again for the help and advice, the car is being looked at tomorrow and I shall keep you advised for future help.
Phil could you give me a bit more information ref "function first transmission mount insert" suggestion, eggs where I could buy it from and is it an easy fit etc?
Many thanks
Julian

Did you get this problem sorted, my 99 C4 had the same symptoms and it was the rotary switch or otherwise called the range selector on the side of the gearbox, easy fix for me.

catching on to this old thread.
gave my 98 996 wash yesterday , then tried to drive it away and lights started flashing between 4th and P and when stick it in Drive flashing between 4th and D.
so I shitted myself, went on the internet, found this thread.
took code reader, connected up and no codes available which apparently quite normal on 1st gen 996.
anyway, tried car today and it works just fine. so Observer water got to something and ***** system up, and after drying out worked fine.
wires, hey?

My old 1999 996 tip had spent a lot of time parked up over its life and it needed a forceful pull into "D" or it would go into limp mode. A specialist said this was due to a stretched gear selector cable and not to worry about it.

I did about 20k miles over the next 5 years in it and it never changed, always just needed to be positive on the gear selection and it would be fine.
