Spoiler Gear Casing Spit Again.....

Renewed the bearing and glued the casing back together with an epoxy based glue about 3 years ago - just spilt causing the gears to grind on lowering the spoiler - to much movement.

Has anyone used a glue that works or is there another solution apart from the obvious - £250 for a new one!

I had this happen too.

The specialist I used for servicing bound it back together with a monster cable tie, which worked fine. I just couldn't stand the thought of it so replaced for new.

It's a bit of a gulp price for what it is, but get it bought, fit it and forget it for another 18-20 years.

Q-bond (http://qbond.net/) is a very strong glue and would be worth trying given its low price. Even if it doesn't work for your casing it is extremely useful around the house and garage.

One additional trick I have used successfully on a number of occasions is to drill tiny holes on each side of a break and use either very small cable-ties or copper wire to "sew" the item together. I have made some very neat and durable repairs this way. The item normally needs gluing as well, but the wire adds mechanical strength.

Had mine sorted by Sam at Impact whilst it was stored last winter ........ and it didn't cost an arm and leg ....... I kind of miss the grinding/crunching sound when it retracts ...... er ...... just kidding ....... silence is golden ...... golden ...... :)

REPLACE! I did the glue-back-together option and the housing and gear assembly is just too small and particular to want to be glued back together again. By breaking apart the housing you are destroying the seam and rebate which provides the main fixing point in the first place.

Porsche tax makes the gear assemblage annoying as the cost is wincy considering the part. But hey, you need the spoiler otherwise it's into the Armco on the Nordschleife!

I use Araldite epoxy glue (blue, long curing) for these repairs, and have never had any failures. However, I pay special attention to ensure that the surfaces are clean and free from any oil before appying the glue strip.
Cheers,
Tore

Yes - tend to agree with that logic.

Have gone for temp cable tie fix and will order a new one in due course, looks like Rose Passion are the cheapest by pennies at the moment.

Hi Colin,
Might be worth taking a chance on an eBay item, it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the usual UK parts guys, with 100% posi feedback.
Maybe someone on here has previously purchased one??

Swap your shagged one for their shagged one and pay £70 plus other fees for shopping in the US.

Buy a new one

Thanks Dom, I'd have bought thinking it was new.. Fools and money must part and all that!

I mounted two of these (without the legs).

Haha please tell me you're joking

Glued & re-glued mine 3 times, gave up, and resorted to an inelegant jumble of cable ties - it doesn't sit well with me, but is holding up & lasting well, and it's tucked away inside it's cover so no one can see.

Saying that, I'm sure I will buy a new unit one day (when all the other jobs are complete).
