I see according to Autocar today that the new Boxster will have four cylinders (we knew that) but will be more expensive than the outgoing 6 cylinder car.

I'm somewhat surprised by that.

2016 Porsche 718 Boxster revealed

The most powerful version of Porsche's all-new, turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine "¨will have a capacity of 2.5 litres and produce up to 345bhp in the facelifted Boxster S.

The model, which has been renamed 718 Boxster S following Porsche's decision to resurrect its hallowed 718 nomenclature, is set to get its first public airing at the Geneva motor show in March. The revised two-seater will be joined by the more keenly priced 718 Boxster, which runs a 2.0-litre variant of the horizontally opposed four-cylinder turbo engine making 296bhp.

The new models will be available from April, with an even more powerful 718 Boxster GTS due next year. At £41,739, the 718 Boxster is priced £1641 above the outgoing Boxster, while the 718 Boxster S costs £50,685, £2142 more than the Boxster S.

Distinguishing the 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S from the outgoing models is a series of styling changes, including a new front bumper sporting larger cooling ducts, and larger air ducts in front of the rear wheel arches. The rear sports a distinctive new accent strip between the tail-lights to give additional visual width.

The 718 Boxster is the first Porsche to be powered by a four-cylinder engine since the 968 ceased production in 1995. Development of the new unit was overseen by Wolfgang Hatz, the head of Porsche's research and development operations suspended in the aftermath of parent company Volkswagen's dieselgate affair.



The new engine is also earmarked to replace the existing flat six in the 718 Cayman, which is also expected to make its debut in Geneva.

With 296bhp and 280lb ft, "¨the 2.0-litre unit makes 25bhp and 66lb ft more than the naturally aspirated 2.7-litre flat six it replaces in the outgoing entry-level Porsche roadster.

Significantly, peak torque appears 1500rpm earlier in the rev range than with the old six-cylinder unit, leading to what Porsche describes as 'added levels of low-end urge and greater mid-range flexibility".

The 718 Boxster S "¨receives a larger, 2.5-litre variant of the flat four turbo powerplant in place of the naturally aspirated 3.4-litre six-cylinder unit currently used. With 345bhp and 310lb ft between 1900 and 4500rpm, the new engine offers a 25bhp increase in output over the "¨unit it replaces, along with a 37lb ft lift in torque.

As before, the most affordable of Porsche's "¨sports car models offer the choice of a standard six-speed manual or optional seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic gearbox, the latter of which has been updated "¨with a new software package that's said to provide added fuel-saving potential.

Porsche says the 718 Boxster has a 0-62mph time of 4.7sec and a 171mph top speed when fitted with the optional PDK gearbox, bettering its predecessor by 0.9sec and 5mph respectively.The 718 Boxster S has claimed figures of 4.2sec "¨and 177mph, in the process beating the official 0-62mph time of the 380bhp 3.8-litre "¨six-cylinder Cayman GT4 "¨by 0.2sec.



As well as providing added power, the new four-cylinder engine also brings a significant improvement in fuel economy over the outgoing six-cylinder engine. The 718 Boxster returns a claimed 40.9mpg on the combined cycle and the 718 Boxster S promises 38.7mpg in combination with the PDK gearbox, representing improvements of 5.1mpg and 4.2mpg respectively.

Along with the new engine, the 718 Boxster features what Porsche describes as a 'sportier tuning of the chassis". Among the changes is a revised electro-mechanical steering system that is said to be 10% more direct than the set-up used on the outgoing Boxsters. Porsche's Active Suspension Management (PASM) continues to be offered as an option, offering a nominal 10mm reduction in ride height over the standard suspension.
 
Interesting. Think it's also going to be positioned above the Cayman, £-wise.

I presume it is still a 981, they've just adopted 718 in the same way a 991 is a 911... :?:
 
I'm okay with the base Boxster having 4 cylinders but S should be 6! I hope the GTS will be 6 cylinders.

Suddenly the extra cost of a 991 over a Boxster seems worth it.

Interesting indeed, and perhaps that also means that the Cayman will no longer get a handful of extra horsepower over the rag top? And wait until the tuners get a hold of the 718 Cayman S - I reckon a little specialist fettling will put it above 400hp and coupled with a little suspension work: potentially eating the 981 GT4's lunch...
 
Apparently the Cayman will have the same engines. It's either a 2 or 2.5 litre (in the S) across the board, with the GTS having more power than the S. The 2 litre has more power than the current 2.7 and the story is the same with the 2.5 compared to the 3.4. The S has a claimed 0-62mph time that betters the 3.8 GT4.

Go figure
 
The rag top version of most cars was always more expensive than the coupe, that was until Porsche decided to have peoples trousers down when they launched the Cayman...now they have finally sussed that out the have put it right, not by putting the price of the Cayman down, oh no, but by putting the Boxster up. I suppose they could say the Boxster was a bargain all this time..

Someone on PH posted a sound clip of the 4cyl, sounds like a Beetle or a Fiat 500 twin air. Its all gone a bit Pete Tong i think, time to watch 6cyl residuals firm up.
 
But it is still a 4 cylinder turbo , never mind how powerful I'm out.

The article I read in autoexpress said that there is an increase in standard equipment, PCM for example is now standard amongst other things, so may go a long way to offsetting any increase.

I was stupidly hoping that the entry level would be redefined with a lower 4 cylinder price

This sort of argument was put forward when Ford first introduced the Sierra Cosworth. Who would buy a wheezy blown 4 cylinder basic Ford block in the Sierra when you could have a more cultured 6 cylinder Capri?

I bought the Capri and which became the classic??

The Boxster S will do 0-60 in 4.2 secs with the reconfigured PDK - faster than the current Spyder!! Wow!

I really like the sound of the 6 cyl Boxster, but predicting which will become the classic or which residuals will rise is not that simple to predict.

I'm hoping to try the new model before making a buying decision.
 
I'm predicting this will firm up the price and desirability of the Boxster Spyder as a bit of a collectible, so that's where my money is going next. The last and fastest of the n/a 6's should be hot property.

I agree with you and I hoped for a more basic model at a lower priced entry level, but that is not in Porsche DNA! They are happy not to have to compete directly with say the Audi TT on sales scale and sell fewer cars at a premium - and they can do it. I was called last week by my OPC to say all their allocation of current model GTS has been spoken for - except one! That one went this week, so no more.

Remember though that the new 4 cyl engine will be expensive to produce - more expensive to produce than the 2.7 or 3.4 motors it replaces I'm sure. The power and torque output from the 2.5 Boxster S is fantastic, so the cost of uprated components and the turbo and turbo control data systems will be higher.

So this 4 cyl engine is not lowering the market placement of the Boxster, it is intended (marketed) as an upgrade!!
 
The 718 Boxster and Boxster S are on the configurator now, so go and have a play with the spec - I did one with spec as close to my 981 BGTS as I can get and and the prices are almost the same. While on the configurator listen to the 718 sound clip then go to 'Models' at top left and change to the 981 GTS and listen to that!!

The engine sound clips on the 718 are terrible though compared to the NA6 engine.
 
Sorry, I`m old school, Porsche is flat 6 or pack up and go home :hand:

There is no replacement for displacement, 2.0 or 2.5 whizzy Turbo :floor:
