hi guys. i am considering getting a car. which model out of air cooled 911 P's is the best to go for? i am not talking about RS , but average man affordability type car. which one will be the best driver, best value for money and best investment? thanks a lot!

First thing, what is your budget? Is it a daily or weekend car.
Are you handy, with a set of spanners keeps cost down.
Running cost come into play as well.
Looking at prices, these days values still high on certain models.

it will be weekend car to drive and add to my small collection to look at.
not scared of a bit of work on it. daily driver for me is motorcycle,i am afraid...sorry!
looking at 2.7 911 - like it very much, but is this model desirable in the eyes of porsche experts?

Sorry but the 2.7 probably doesn't fall into the 'average man affordability type car' category anymore.

ok,thanks. what would be considered a good price for 2.7 coupe 911s 1975?
and back to original questions - compare to other air cooled models is it a good one to go for? or earlier ones would be better?
thanks a lot in advance!
also someone told me that they made 3x different 2.7 engines and some are a lot better then others .what do i need to look out for?

also, is there a way of finding out original colour of the car from VIN number? would Porsche give me this info? anyone got contact to correct person?

Honestly, the last of the air cooled cars to appreciate was the 911SC (1978 - 1983). It was, for many years the unloved 911 due to it's slight power decrease from the 911S that preceded it.
Even now though, they are commanding strong money.

I can say from experience though that the SC is a great car and was a little more refined than the earlier models.

Nice ones are fetching 20-30k. Good ones much more.

My advice is to buy a completely standard car, as any modification is frowned upon by serious collectors.

thanks a lot!
i am looking at the moment at standard 2.7 911s , 1975
what should i be expecting to pay for it? LHD

even LHD?
i thought LHD ones are a lot cheaper?

is there a way of finding out original colour of the car from VIN number?

As I mentioned, it depends A LOT on condition. Do you want a car to restore? Drive away completed, or somewhere in between?

LHD cars seem to be commanding good money too now as anything air-cooled is hot property.

The VIN number will tell you all of the specs of the car, just google how to read it and it will give you the information you need. You can contact Porsche for a history of the car also.

problem with piston heads and ebay is: you never know if people just inflating prices? i want to find out realistic price for which cars actually selling?? want to make sure i will pay fair price

the car i am looking at is somewhere in between (to me is part of the fun of owning the car is fiddle around with it, so dont want fully done up one)
it drives and no rust, but interior is tired and probably will do with full respray

They way I look at it, you look at what is available on PH and AT (not eBay) and average out the asking prices. After all, these are marketplaces where people are trying to sell cars.
I would then take 10% for negotiation margin. It's a difficult one because air-cooled Porsche's are worth whatever someone will pay and some people are paying inflated prices due to the demand for these cars.

I've seen similar cars sell for 20k difference just based on demand at that time. I paid market rate for my 4S simply because I 'just' missed out on 2 others and didn't want to miss this one.

A good way of finding a nice car at the best price might be to start talking to some of the specialists and get the inside scoop when one is coming up for sale.

so 40K for 2.7 911s LHD in semi done up condition is about right ?
or does it sounds too much?

thanks a lot, appreciate all the help. as i said i believe that true info can only be picked up on the forums as in my experience specialist dealer will tell you conflicting stories depending on what they have in stock!
