News in from LA apparently...

The Cayman GT4 is being hailed by many as the greatest and purest sports car that Porsche currently makes. It takes the great mid-engine platform of the Cayman, and gives it that special performance touch that made the 911 GT3 so special for so many years. But what about the weekend racers who desire a car as laser focused as the 911 GT3 Cup? What are they going to buy if they want the dynamics of a mid-engined car? Well Porsche is answering your cries of 'me too!" with a new version of the Cayman GT4

The Clubsport is track-only car that takes the already phenomenal GT4, cuts weight, and adds performance goodies borrowed from the 911 race car. You will find the same front suspension and braking kit on the Cayman Clubsport as the GT3 Cup. Curb weight should come in around 2800 pounds, with horsepower sitting at 385 horsepower from the same 3.8-liter flat-six found in the GT4.

As a track only machine, this car is about performance, speed and laptimes above all else. That means it wont have comfort items like AC or a stereo, but that also means it won't have a clutch. Just like the GT3 and Cup cars, the Clubsport will arrive with a PDK as its only transmission option.

Can't find it's way out of a car park.

Just as well really as without any number plates you wouldnt get far if you you could get out..

Its an odd bit of marketing spin isnt it. Are they expecting joe public to buy one, and a trailer and take it tracking? I doubt it somehow. If its a msport product, bit like the m235i race car bmw make for their own VLN class, i'd assume thats where this thing is headed? How much is it? The M235i is about £50k. im sure Porsche may be feeling a bit left out, it was they after all that started the turn key racer thing in the first place.

True enough but it will have to be trailered everywhere, at least for the track day enthusiasts that is. If they create a one make series, then fair game. I bet it will be pretty rapid on a track!

It'll be a while I reckon - early anecdotal tales point to acquiring one being much like the road version : initially rationed to preferred customers (those customers being fairly serious racing teams at the moment). Clearly once they hit the used market there is every chance that it will happen, but note how few 911 Cup cars have ended up road registered of the thousands made. More likely that they will be track day toys that are trailered rather than road registered I would think?

{Though the footnote should be added that being PDK ought to make it a more civilised road driving experience than the sequential boxes in the 997 and 991 Cup cars.}

Why the hell would you want to? The suspension would shake your teeth out, there's absolutely no carpet or sound deadening and no rust protection underneath.

Chris.

Update - the GT4 racing car is indeed (as earlier speculated) getting its own class in the VLN (much like BMW's M235i Racing variant) and they are expecting around 15 entries for next year.

A few teams have already announced programmes in eligible GT4 series in the US for next year too (Caymans are already a popular racing platform over there - much more so than in Europe).
