Just a quick one - if you were planning on purchasing from somewhere like Northway, 911Virgin etc would you shell out for an independant PPI or would it be a waste of money?

A PPI should tell you about the car warts and all.

As any used car is gamble, peace of mind with a PPI will have make you make your mind up.
Another point maybe, a lower offer due to what the PPI brings up.

I would

If it's from a well respected Indy, I'd probably just get a bore scope done.

......but remember, nobody in this world is 100% trustworthy, especially people who sell cars to make money

I would have it done Jamie.

For two reasons :-

It gives you a clear indication of any current issues, along with mid range knowledge of what may be due, say within the next twelve / eighteen months

It also gives you relative peace of mind, as a consequence its money well spent.

The dealers you mentioned are highly regarded but for what it's worth do it !

:bandit:

You could ask the dealer for evidence of the checks they have performed. As there are many know potential issues, over revs, bore scoring, ims etc it is likely the dealer checked all this out already to avoid them buying a dud in the first place.

Ok right next question - the car is in Surrey who's the best to ask? Peter Morgan?

Oh and one last thing - is it usual to leave a deposit pending inspection?

I'm not sure Peter Morgan covers Surrey. Best to contact him. Plenty of other specialists in or near Surrey (9e, Parr, RSR Engineering and so on) but most will need you to take the car there, or might possibly come out but you'll gave to pay travel time/costs of course and have access to ramps.

I believe purchase subject to inspection is common and would involve paying a deposit (refundable only if the inspection shows something serious). Another alternative is to get it inspected before buying but there you run the risk that it is sold in the meantime so I guess it depends how desirable the car is and how much it looks to be "the one" for you.

Just had a lengthy conversation with Peter Morgan and he will be inspecting it this week. The seller was more than happy for the inspection to be carried out and said "if anything does come up, you will get your deposit back simple as that"

Going to be a long week...

PPI on a 3.6 996 is pointless without a bore-scope. :dont know:
