Hi all,
just hit 128k in the 1992 c4 Manual

when I accelerate hard in 2nd and it hits 4k rpm the revs start to race. Same in third. It has just started to do this ( but not every time)

So I am thinking it's a new clutch.

After some research , and going around in circles, I find myself needing some seasoned advice !

I like the idea of a lightened flywheel and a good clutch.

I hear that this might present an idle challenge ?

I am happy to have the ecu upgraded if it's a must when having a flywheel lightenend.

I am also happy to have some sensible bits replaced when the engine is out whilst having the clutch done.

Any thoughts on what you guys and girls have had done or that you would recommend would be great.

Ref budget, the clutch is my priority, but if gains can be had without tripling the budget then I can balance the benifits.

Any ideas?

Hi orac,

I had the GT3 flywheel and a standard clutch fitted to my car when it was a C4. To be honest, at the time I didn't notice a huge improvement from the flywheel and I put this down to it being a C4. Having converted my car to C2 I think the flywheel is now working much better but the change is masked by other changes made at the same time, such as cams, ecu and the fact the c2 conversion was done using a 993 6sp box, so the ratios are very different.

In terms of idle control, I went for a Steve Wong chip originally, which has the idle fix and this definitely helped but I found I had to do a system adaption (using an OBD tool) every time I disconnected the battery, which was a pain. Otherwise the car would stall all the time and be nearly undriveable. My car may have had some other issues with the air flow meter though as others have never had a problem with the Steve Wong chip.

If you are not planning to do much else in the way of mods, on a C4 I would say the LWF is not worth the expense.

The only real fix for stalling with the LWF I found was when I replaced the whole ECU setup with the kit from Specialist Components and had the car setup on their rolling road. This is worth doing if you do nothing else in my opinion as the car drives so much nicer with it fitted and on my car (in conjunction with cup cams, decat and secondary silencer removed) makes over 300bhp.

If you want a Steve Wong chip to fix your idle problems I have one going spare I will do you a good deal on! The Steve Wong chip is also worth having on its own as I noticed a worthwhile improvement over the Ruf chip it replaced.
