Especially when discussing the 991 many Porschephiles refer to how big the 911 has become.

It's true that if you put an original 911 against a 2015 model there is a massive difference - although I'd argue that, comparatively, the difference is no more than if you put a 70s Fiesta against the latest one - but I wondered if the 991 is actually that much bigger than the other more recent models.

A quick google around various sites got me the figures and although I can't claim them to be 'official' they seem pretty accurate.

Taking the Turbo as an example it's clear that the 991 isn't actually as much of a bloater as many people think - especially when compared to a 996T or 997T. The 'step change' happened in Y2k.

930 Turbo 4290mm long 1775 mm wide
964 Turbo 4275mm long 1775 mm wide
993 Turbo 4291mm long 1775 mm wide
996 Turbo 4435mm long 1830 mm wide
997 Turbo 4450mm long 1852 mm wide
991 Turbo 4506mm long 1880 mm wide

Given the relative degrees of performance and refinement the growth of 'only' 216mm in length and 105mm in width of a 991T vs a 930T seems pretty reasonable. :dont know:

An original 911 (4135mm long and 1600mm wide) compared to a 991T is pretty extreme though.

A 371mm difference in length and incredibly a 280mm (11 inches !!) difference in width is quite amazing.

Is it just getting fatter or heavier as well? :D

I was looking at some 70's Mustangs yesterday at the Oulton park gold cup and they just don't look big anymore!

930T :food: :food: :food:

The 930 Turbo's are undervalued compared to the 964 and 993 Turbo's.
My brother had an absolute specimen 1979 930 and the turbo lag made it feel laugh out loud fast. 8)

Humans are bigger! Especially in America, Porsche's biggest market.

The Total 911 data file indicates the weight step change came 20 years earlier and has been kept in check pretty well since with power to weight increasing each gen a little later on. The smallest weight increase is between 997 to 991. Wonder if the 991.2 will see a reduction in weight :?:

930 Turbo 4290mm long 1775 mm wide 1140-1300kg 260-330bhp
964 Turbo 4275mm long 1775 mm wide 1470kg 320bhp
993 Turbo 4291mm long 1775 mm wide 1500kg 408bhp
996 Turbo 4435mm long 1830 mm wide 1540kg 420bhp
997 Turbo 4450mm long 1852 mm wide 1585kg 480bhp
991 Turbo 4506mm long 1880 mm wide 1595kg 520bhp

Is there a difference between gen 1 and 2 turbo dimensions :?: BHP for gen 2 is 500 not 480 AFAIK

997 Gen 2 Turbo dimensions are the same, power is 500bhp as you say, weight is slightly less at 1570kg.

997 Turbo S is 530bhp/1585kg. 991 Turbo S has 560bhp/1605kg

Blimey! I felt every one of those kilos on the tight left downhill turn at the top of the Alpine course..... :drive:

I think me AND Ness need to go on a diet.........

Thread resurrection, sorry ..

Can someone confirm the definate width of a 996T before I buy one and find it won't fit in my garage

T8 confirmed 1830 but pistonheads says 1,852 mm and although I realise this is only very fractionally different but wanted to make sure one of these was correct.

I've just re-checked 7 different sources (including The Streather 'Bible' and road tests from 2002-2005) and all quote 1830mm. The only place I can't check now is in the Driver's Manual as I don't have one anymore.

Just checked the manual and it shows the width as 1830mm. I'm not selling but you could always have a look at my one for reference if you wanted, while you're considering whether to get one..
