I am pretty doubtful anyone will be able to help with this, but here goes...

I was sitting in the drivers seat with the door open and working on my dash and had removed the speedo, when I noticed a light coming from within the dash. This torned out to be the light under the bonnet that comes on when its open. Eureka I thought, this is what must be draining my battery (not a serious problem, but I have had a sluggish turnover occasionally even though it was after a long run).

I took the bulb out just in case I have a dodgy bonnet switch.

Is there anyone out there that knows if the bonnet light comes on when the drivers door is opened, or whether it is only activated when the bonnet is open?

I don't have a wiring diagram, so can't check and now the car is at the bodyshop so I can't run any more tests.

From memory the bonnet light operates when the interior light button on the door functions regardless whether the trunk lid is open. Odd I know

To confirm or not you could put a video device (ie phone) in the trunk with it shut and then open the car door to see if it comes on. To see if it goes off when you shut the door remember to wait for the timed delay. Or even easier 'close' the locking latch with a screwdriver so it appears the lid is secured and you can see the light function.

All interior (inc boot) lights are on the same circuit (one for all and all for one)

The real question is, how much of a haircut did you give it?

Back from holiday (sorry, didn't take the 993 with me).

Your responses confirm the position as when I picked the car up from the bodyshop (it was there while I was on holiday and the bonnet bulb was removed), the guy asked if I knew the battery was not keeping charge - bummer, so it wasn't that that was draining the battery.

I guess I am left with still thinking its the siren battery that may be duff as I refuse to believe 993's suffer from black magic battery drain. A car is a car, there will be a cause for it (fingers crossed )

BTW - The body shop repaired a rusty NS sill that had a previous bodge repair and Hans Peter the Netherlands speedo specialist has fixed the speedo unit and it is winging its way back to me as I type, so no dodgy miles done while it was unplugged.

Don't forget to check the glove box light too - when that catch is out of alignment the light stays on when the door is shut!
However, if any of these switches are live when you arm the alarm - the little red repeaters on the door caps flash twice as fast, so that is a give-away.

How old is the battery?

An open bonnet or door will activate several things, a relay as well as the alarm control module i addition to the interior lights. (the window lifts are active when the doors are open at ignition off)
Some turn off the interior lights to avoid emptying the battery, but then misses the chance to spot a problem with the door switches. As far as I remember is the current draw over 100mA for the relay only. This is about four times the normal ignition-off current, and will empty the battery accordingly faster.
Cheers,
Tore
