Hi all.

Firstly hello from me. Soon to be a 997 owner (with your help).

I've read a lot of information about these beauties and would like to request from this forum please to help me choose the right car.

This is my first porsche. Loved them since I was a child and I'm finally in a position now to buy one.

My budget. ID like to pay 26k but I could stretch to 35k if I had too.
My preference. 997.2, I'd like a 3.8S but think I'd be equally happy with the 3.6 non s. But I'd consider a good 997.1 but I'd always worry about the dreaded bore scoring and possible effects on resale.
Extras. Well here I'm stumped. I keep looking at cars with the chrono sports pack. Not sure why but gut tells me to get it.
The rest I'm open to suggestions. What do you think are must haves?

Would prefer an auto box. So either triptronic or the PDK.

What are the thoughts on carbon breaks?

What should I avoid at all costs?

Which dealers have good reputations? I'm happy to travel.

3rd party warranty or not?

Please guys I know this sort of question has probably been asked a million times. But many thanks in advance for any inputs.

Hiya, Welcome back. I remember chatting a few years ago. :thumb:

Your budget range is quite wide. Obviously the more you spend the wider your options.

A few pointers.

The 3.6 and 3.8 both have their fans. An equivalent S will always cost more.

If you want PDK it'll have to be a Gen2 car.

Sports Chrono is desirable.

Many will say that a PSE is a 'must have'. Others prefer stealth mode.

Carbon brakes are rare to find on a Carrera.

There's not much to avoid. Garish colour combos aren't common on 997s.

There's lots of excellent Porsche specialists around. Read any one of the several Porsche magazines for contact details and/or refer to the advertisers on here.

If you buy from a decent dealer you'll get a decent warranty.

Happy Hunting. :thumb:

Wow thanks for that.. Hopefully I behaved myself? lol.

To be honest.. I've been waiting for this moment for a long time. Now it's here.. I'm worried sick about getting a lemon. Life is unfair...

Re my budget. Yep it's wide. I started looking at 25k cars.. read about Gen 2.. researched them and finally increased the budget to try and capture one.

I suppose my ideal car would be a 997.2 S up to a max of 50k miles, fully serviced, with PSE, Chrono Sports Pack, PDK.. plus any other extras also.

Really can't see you getting a Gen2 car for £35k, especially with sports chrono.

I brought mine in April, having spent over a year looking for the right car.

What you want are, in my opinion, PSE, Sports Chrono, A good history, preferably from a good known dealer, parking sensor.

For me, avoid any car with a red interior, they are shocking and will kill you on resale.

Drive some, because you can and will feel a bad car in the way it drives. It should feel taught, if it doesn't, walk away.

Mine has FPSH and the extended warranty. It's a 2007 C2S Cabrio with a huge set of options, black, black leather, hard back sports seats, PSE, ipod and phone connection through a 3rd party system which works fine (PCM2 is USELESS!!!!), sports chrono.

Now, about sports chrono. Yes, it is desireable. if you plan to track your car, then you want it. However, everyday driving won't see you use it. When I am out in a spirited manner then I do turn it on, but then turn PASM off, so you get the throttle response improvements etc, but PASM on roads is pointless. Makes the car jiggle around as our roads are not glass smooth, and completely undriveable.

I would also say that prices are on the up. I paid £30k for mine, with 42,000 miles and that exceptional history (every single receipt for anything ever!) from a good dealer. I found it needed a new clutch, which the dealer has paid for out of his pocket without quibbling at all. It's been driven by a specialist as well, who spotted the clutch was starting to go a week after I got it.

All in all, good dealers will want a premium over a private sale, but if bore scoring etc is worrying you, go to a good dealer.

If I look around now, I couldn't buy the same car for £30k, so get on with it! Get a good Gen 1 car, an S, with a manual, don't under any circumstances get a Tiptronic (they are awful!), and get a good spec car.

You can scrape into 997 ownership, but I wouldn't recommend it!

If you wanted to spend £25k, then this looks ok

Hi I got my gen 2 for less than 35k a tad over 33k, mine is a Carrera 2010 with PSE, PDK, Sport Chrono, Bose on 19" Carrera S II wheels.
Perhaps I was lucky getting mine for that price but I'm sure they are out there if you bide your time.

:redcard:

If you want an auto and can't stretch to a PDK car there's no other choice.

Tiptronic is not as good as PDK but for an automatic it's actually pretty good.

If you buy unseen you really are increasing the risk of a lemon. I'm sure there's lots of people on here who have bought their car unseen and have had no problems. However, I would only buy unseen if it was brand-new. You need to go for a good drive and have a really good look and poke around if you want to reduce your risk.

Good luck! :thumb:

My advise would be look at and drive as many as you can first.

Then buy from a OPC so you get 2 year warranty or from a dealer or private person who has an OPC warranty.

This is so when you have spent all your money on a car, if it goes badly wrong you won't have to spend more money to put it right.

Everything on a 997 costs £1000, everything. But you will love it.

Personally go for a Gen 2 PDK C4S with as many options as you can find on one.

And any colour you want, that's just personal preference.

Happy Hunting

Hello,
I'm not a 997 owner but I did recently buy a Cayman S Gen 2 with PDK and sports chrono.
Not sure how the drive compares to the 997 but I would definitely go for a gen 2 if you can stretch to it, I'd be surprised if you didn't get the extra money back come resale time. You will also hopefully not spend so much time waiting for engine issues (that probably won't ever happen anyway).

I had a 996 that was a cabrio with tiptronic and had a red interior, it was a great car but I spent too much time being paranoid about stuff that never materialised and yes it was hard to sell due to all of the above.

Great advice there ^^

I don't know much about 997 series worth telling but my friend bought one after advice from here about which 997 to buy.
He found one and bought it from PCT and they have so far been great with after sales.

:) Welcome. I recently bought a very nice black 59 plate 997 Gen 2 C2S PDK with a good spec (even has illuminated carbon door entry guards WTF), 53K miles for £38K (after a bit of haggling) from a very good indy. I would personally stretch to a Gen 2 because of more reliable engine & consequently better residuals.

Hi is there any reason not to buy a manual car ?

:?

I assume that you're asking if there's any known issues with 997 manual boxes. If so .... I'm not aware of any.
