My fiancee has recently bought a 996 turbo X50 manual. It is a fantastic car ( I talked her into it....secretly very jealous!!)

It needed a few bits doing to it and based in Derbyshire, we are a fair way from most specialists.
From reading the forums, I had heard many good things about Ken at 9E. I was very keen for them to service the car, health check and sort a few niggly problems. Now, how do I persuade her to drive 180 miles to get it looked at??
We suspected it may have been mapped previously as it was running 1 to 1.1 bar and went like a rocket (as they do) however, she noticed it feeling a bit sluggish after a long spirited run. Also it was definitely noisier than it previously was.

We did our research and decided to let Ken do the stage 1 conversion and give it a once over.

When we got to the garage, I could not believe the cars there, 997 turbos, GT2's etc etc. I could easily have lost half a day!!

Ken went through the options and costings, then added the necessity for a new clutch ( thought this will not be popular with OH) wanted 997 short shift to replace the very unpleasant one on the car plus a few other bits and pieces.

After a few days we got a list of recommendations and necessary works, all extremely clear, costed and explained to us simpletons! The increased boost was an air leak, the exhaust manifold was blowing and the waste gates were kippered.

With the amount of work being done, the final bill would be quite big and I was unsure about the sense of doing the upgrade as this meant uprated clutch and how would it drive with mods would the clutch be heavy, hard to drive, temperamental etc etc...

Ken did wonders to get the car done on time. He had a nightmare fixing a very annoying rattle with the sunroof. A "can you just" job that I am sure he won't want to hear again!! The level of service and keeping us informed was second to none. He even offered to drive us back to Derbyshire from Gatwick if it was not done on time for us getting back from our holiday and trailer the car home! And this, just for getting the bl@@dy sunroof rattle fixed! All the fun stuff was done!!

I did have reservations about the clutch. I have had uprated clutches before on other cars and they have been a pig. I really thought my OH would hate it and curse my suggestion of the tune which made this necessary! I needn't have worried! The car drives absolutely superbly, so smooth, really quick and the new clutch and quick shift are fantastic. We were stuck on friday afternoon M25 for 2 hours and the car was so easy to drive.

It is running 1.2 to 1.3 bar now and having now had the chance to drive it properly on roads we know, the car is transformed. It doesn't feel tuned, and the usual downsides with that, it is smooth, so user friendly and goes like a scolded cat! She said it was the best money she had ever spent (this bill would have bought her many pairs of Jimmy Choo's) so that is saying something.

To top it all off, it made £7.50 a year difference on the Insurance!!!

Hi
Thanks for that informative post.

It reminds me of the service I got from a Ducati service centre based up north (I'm in Birmingham but Wolverhampton Ducati are simply the worst lot of technicians I have dealt with in my life...haven't used JHP in cov) but still preferred to send it North anyway.

Anyway, perhaps others will chip in but 1.2-1.3 bar seems a little high? Even with a remap? ... See my recent posts regarding over boost etc and how it was cured with an N75 change (easy job) ... I see you have sorted your waste gates and boost leak already... So the 1.3 bar to me (unless you are absolutely sure the car has been tuned this way) would be pointing towards a malfunction of this valve

Glad you enjoy the car. Don't mention the sunroof - that is a swear word now :hand:

The boost is correct - chart below is from the car. It is how we maximise the 0-300kph times amongst other tuning parameters. Runs 92% Fuel Duty on 5bar and less than 8 seconds 60-130mph.

The reason for changing the clutch is the x50/gt2 clutch is not strong enough for this, so we fit an 890nm to cope.

This is the fastest method for 0-300kph times for standard k24 turbos.

Ken

Well there we have it :) ...

I'll shut up now :) lol

1.3 bar for an X50 is fine. Its probably running circa 500-530 bhp and 500-530 lb/ft torque with Ken's magic dust and depending on whether you upgraded the exhaust which would have got you nearer the 530 bhp. :thumb:

She seems quite taken with the tuned car world! I am hoping that she will look to replace to the switchable exhaust at some point as they sounded and looked superb. Best of both worlds really. Then may be the rest of stage 2 :D
She is chuffed with it though. Any doubts anybody has about the 890nm clutch are ill founded. They are just as nice as standard.

Sounds like top service as always from the 9e guys.

mmmmm now got me thinking I need more boost/ power out of my K24's

Wow, that boost curve is steep between 3k and 4k. I can only imagine that is one almighty shove in the back when it comes on boost!

It is a great kick, but if you want gut wrenching kick then you need a 9eXX  and it is RWD only.

The worse part is our 4.2L version - it just is slipping 3rd gear and it is rated to 1500nm tq. Having to find a solution that holds 2000nm tq

Ok, that is just insane...fair play :)

I worked on diesel engine development for a long time so have seen the peak torque figures drop further down the RPM range as we developed the VNT turbo's onto the common rail diesels. Obviously these are good old fashion vacuum operated wastegate turbos! (and nothing wrong with that...)

You should take her to the next VMAX event at Brunters. She'll soon be wanting to go even faster

She is well up for that
When is it?

I'm may be going to do Elvington third or fourth week of June but being put off bit as its only over a mile.

Not sure when next Brunters event is but copy of late email from the guys that run VMAX for your convenience:-

Dear all,

It's been a busy 2015 so far for Vmax200 with three events already completed, and we're now looking forward to our Destination Wales driving tour which also includes two Vmax200 events. Films from recent events can be seen here: http://www.vmax200.com/films/

The Destination Wales weekend runs from Friday July 10th until Monday 13th and encompasses great driving roads including the infamous 'Evo Triangle', great hotels, fantastic food, a boat blast and also the two Vmax200 events amongst other surprises along the way.

Vmax Taranis sees us take to a smooth airfield shortlisted to be the new Spaceport, we will have top speed runs and also the opportunity for acceleration testing using our Vboxes.

Next is Vmax Landspeed. You may have seen actor Idris Elba breaking the Landspeed record in the press recently, well we will be taking to the same beach, the Landspeed record beach raced by Sir Malcom Campbell and other legends of old for our own Vmax Landspeed day. See more about Idris here: http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/idris-elba-beats-world-land-5635582

Information about the weekend can be found in the following link, we have a few spaces for all cars available and we would love for you to join us: http://www.autovivendi.com/events/destination-wales-vmax-taranis/

You could of course just join us for the Vmax200 events should you wish.

We are also undertaking a number of exciting driving tours around the world in all types of vehicles from muscle cars to super-jeeps , you'll find the details in our downloadable events calendar in the following link:
http://www.autovivendi.com/our-events/

If we can help with further information for any of the above we'd love to hear from you.

In the meantime, be safe and we wish you all well.

Kindest regards,

Craig & the team at Vmax200
