So in which appears to be a never ending search for my first piece of pork I keep coming back to the 996 as its starting to look retro cool.

Found a couple on the interweb which caught my eye and I reckon could be had for the same price.

Now before any inspection which I would of course do, which is less likely to blow up/cost me a fortune first?

I know and read all about the engine issues with the 996/997.1.

The second car 996TT might need a bit of work and has double the mileage so differentials, engine and gearbox age may require a rebuild as well as the usual radiators, condensers, track arms etc.

Price is around £18k for both. At such high milages what should I be looking out for? The warranty I can get will only cover 50% of parts and no labour due age of the cars. Porsche or ARM wont do cover due to age.

The ads,

Beautiful Carrera 4S - 996 / 2003 in Mint condition - AED 115,000

2001 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo - AED 90,000

Thoughts, comments, suggestions welcome

Turbo all day long

if you can afford the extra then put that towards turning the Turbo into mint condition

High mileage turbo is still likely to be more reliable. Don't get me wrong lots of things do need replacing from time to time but it suffers none of the engine woes.

I'd be straight on the turbo

Another for the TT, particularly if it has a good service record and evidence of it being well maintained.

If reliablility is your chief concern, I would rule out all non-GT NA 996.2 and 997.1 cars unless preventative measures have been carried out or you accept the risk of bore scoring and that it is reflected in the price.

That's just my view.

The car wouldn't be a daily driver so I wouldn't be piling on the miles. I do think both cars will blow up eventually either with the C4S engine or some part of the drive train with the TT.

I guess it really just comes down to the regular maintenance costs with higher mileage cars. I live in the Middle East so parts are expensive to come by and only really 2 options for maintenance and that's OPC or just 1 indy.

So assuming the TT has full service history as per ad what big thing will I be looking to get changed and that mileage/age.

I don't have access to a workshop manual so don't know what will happen next.

No argument. It HAS to be the Turbo. Forget the NA car. You won't need to sleep with a sixpence under the pillow for luck with a Turbo.

I went through the usual 996 C4S versus 996 Turbo debate in my head many times. Upped my budget and bought a Turbo as my first Porsche - the one I had a poster of on my bedroom at University in 1974.

I'm so glad I did on so many counts. PM me if you want to know all the counts.

Turbo for sure!!! and at that money your getting a absolute BARGAIN :thumb:

Kempus, I'm also in Dubai and bought a 996 turbo back in September. I have a mate who's also bought one a few months ago. We both live in Mirdif and you're welcome to come up and have a look around our cars. We've looked at loads of 996 Turbos when we were looking for our own cars. Mine is a second car and my mates is a daily. Both are working out fine.

I'd suggest the one in Abu Dhabi looks good but be wary of US specs. This may just mean exactly that or it may be one of the many US spec cars that have been involved in an accident and then shipped to the UAE. Get a carfax done on it. I'd then get an inspection. There's a new branch of JZM (respected UK porsche independent) opened in Abu Dhabi. Otherwise, Alex Renner would do a good inspection in Dubai. There are loads of other specialists in Dubai as well - I can tell you the ones to use or avoid. Parts can be shipped from all over the world, especially if yours won't be a daily.

Manual cars do seem to be worth less here so you could probably negotiate quite well on that turbo. Even at AED 90k that's £15k, so a bargain!

They make great daily drivers here. The AC is amazing! Manual is a bit of a pain in the traffic but a comfortable car. I've also found someone who'll do fully comp Insurance, which is otherwise impossible to get on a car over 10 years old.

Matt

2 Turbos = Fun

Turbo for sure, looks great in the yellow too.

I think mine had 92k miles on it when I bought it, now has about 120k, and is perfect.

Gets looked after by 9e, so if anything was wrong I'd know about it.

I love the fact people are put off by high miles, means I get to spend less money.

Well I'm going to have to go against the grain and say c4s.

Nah turbo any day of the week. They are such great cars and bullet proof engines. It's still a super car so not cheap to maintain but closer to bmw prices then Ferrari 8)
