Buying 996 Turbo - few queries for experienced owners

Hi All,

Im currently looking at a 996 Turbo, its an '03 model, got 76k on the clock. Has a pretty well documented history, mainly OPC and last with an Indy (HD Motorsports???).

Seller says clutch has been done, discs and pads are ok.

  • Bad points seller explains are Heat shield bolts need replacing - could this be something worse being hidden here?
Leather looks a bit tatty and drivers bolster and seat edge (where getting in an out) looks a bit flattened.
Passenger window - problem with mechanism
    Interior light switch broken
Has aero kit front splitter/ spolier which looks (IMO) awful so id like to fit a stock - is this easy?
Has a single CD no nav or cruise - is it easy to fit a PCM unit to make it look stock?

The car is offered at a not too unreasonable price, but can anyone offer any advice or warning signs with whats been mentioned above that i should be aware

Thanks in advance

Hi

I have recently joined the 96 tt club, and even though this is my sixth 911 I would not be classed as an expert by any stretch of the imagination.

My advise is pretty obvious really, and that is to have a PPi on the car that you are looking at, I did and the specialist (Steve Bull) found plenty of things to do including securing heat shields etc etc and Actuators/Clutch Acc the list went on. Not everything on the list was done, but the deal breakers were all carried out and the resulting £2k spend was reduced from the asking price of the car.

You can easily spank £5k very quickly on these cars, more views will follow but please get it PPi'd before committing.

Good Luck....

Hi

Heatshields are just a pain on these cars and rot pretty rapidly. They are also a pain to remove as the bolts just turn into blobs of metal and are really difficult to get out. There are lots of threads on here but in the sort to medium term the only issue with them being loose is that they will rattle. Mine are in this category at the moment but I can't hear them rattling :)

Leather - not sure I guess it can be repaired if it's just worn.

The passenger window will be easily fixable if you are ok with a spanner or fairly cheap at a local Indy.

Interior light switch - if it is the switch it should be easy to get a replacement from OPC or a Porsche breaker/ebay...

Front Aero splitter is easy to swap - you may even turn a small profit as the Aero ones cost a fair bit new and they are always getting broken for obvious reasons.

Don't know about the cd - lots of people swap out for something more modern so you might pick up one second hand if you want the period look...

There is a lot more to go wrong though... A proper inspection is a wise idea.

Other than that though the common things to go wrong - all rads (cooling and aircon), water pump, turbo actuators, front suspension arms, rear spoiler mech, engine mounts...

hope this helps!

:yeah:

&

:welcome:

The points you mention are VERY minor in my opinion and sound very DIYable - I am also not an expert though

Grab it whilst you can if it's a good price

Thanks so much for the prompt replies all! :)

Should i be put off or wary of the mileage being 76k? Im not intending to clock up much on it and want to see it as an investment, but are these high milers much less desirable?

Oh, i forgot to mention, its had a Milltek 200 Cel exhaust fitted. Should i be concerned? Does this require a remap or fettling after fitting n aftermarket exhaust system? Is it better than a std?

76k...high... :? ...it's just run in mate :thumb:

It's a driver, not really an investment. Like chalk and cheese or Cheshire911 and New996Buyer...don't worry, you'll get the joke soon

Milltek is very good in my opinion. 100% better than standard and lighter too, a std exhaust weighs a tonne!

I am pretty sure you would need a remap if fitting an exhaust, but surely it would be noticeable if it has not had a remap :dont know:

Anyway...get off the computer, get down to the buyer and get this bought...

The 99 million dollar question that we all want to know...how much is this little hidden gem :bandit: :?:

If it's the one I think it is, I appreciate the advert is ***** but it's a bloody bargain. You stand to make on that if it all checks out OK by the time you put it on your driveway!!

Good luck and keep us posted

Hi Guys,

ha, i think were talking about the same car. Terrible pictures and dont really sell it much and im concerned underneath lays poor condition or neglected car. But needless to say it seems like a good price...but too good to be true maybe??? destined fro problems?

Im prepared to wait for the right one and this one a heck of a trek away but i dont mind that too much - Roadtrip! :)

Having seen the ad, initial thoughts??

Thats the one sir! Just dont want to be caught short driving home and engine blows up, turbos fail, suspension gives in, etc...

Paranoid i know but having owned a 997.1, fear is inevitable

Any support is welcome :)

can anyone recommend a PPI service top of Scotland? Ive not run this pas the gent who is selling. He comes across genuine and took time to explain the car to me.

Do PPI specialists travel to the car at the home of the owners?...and roughly how much should i budget for a decent review?

thanks again for all support

Have you done an HPI too? These often tell a story.

I'd be questioning why it has the front aero spoiler but none of the rear aero kit.

Certainly need to ask why and check for any signs of a frontal impact.

Aero spoiler is usually an owner preference 'upgrade'. If it had a GT2 front bumper then i'd be questioning if it had had a frontal impact but who can tell anything from pictures :dont know:

Just get a PPI done, will save you alot of time and effort.

Some pictures are rubbish = great car and vice versa.

I'd travel anywhere though for the right car.

If the seller sounded genuine then that's half the worry gone.

You had better be quick, wouldn't be surprised if this is sold by the end of the day!

straight forward

Seems pretty straight forward this. If you are interested, get it PPI'd, particularly given your level of worry and then you will know where you stand.
