So, I am reasonably new to the UK and I am thinking about buying my first car here. It will likely be a 2006-2010 997 4S.
Having not insured a car here before, I have a few questions you guys might be able to help with?

I am 43 yo male and live in central London (W2).

1. Is the car insured based on where it is stored? ie - If I keep the car in self storage outside the M25 will it be cheaper, or is it based on where I live?

2. Is the car insured, or me?

Any other smart tips that can help me keep my Insurance low?

1. It should be based on where it is parked overnight plus some insurers ask you where it is parked during the day. I'm not sure how leaving it in a place that isn't your home will go down with the insurers - I'm guessing not good, but someone more informed will be along shortly.

2. The car is insured. You will get "fully comp" which covers you, your vehicle and any other 3rd party vehicles. Ask them if you are allowed to drive other vehicles though you are likely to only be covered "3rd party" which means if you crash, your insurer will only pay for other vehicles and NOT your friend's car that you borrowed for spin!

3. Have you built up any years driving experience over here? No claims help bring down the premium A LOT! Make sure you request that your no claims is "protected", meaning that if you crash, car gets stolen etc then you don't lose the discount that is applied to your Insurance premium.

Also, may be best to find a specialist insurer that takes into account any driving history from an insurer abroad. Not sure which ones do?

Try go compare.com, compare the market .com, Aviva, Admiral, then some of the specialists like Adrian Flux.

Best of luck - great choice in car btw!

Thanks Jim, this helps a lot.
I am actually thinking of storing the car with a specialist car storage company. Many of these companies have CCTV and other security measures far greater than the typical home, so hopefully the insurers respect that.

I was in a similar position, new expat in Europe, not sure how local Insurance market worked and how UK driving years would be discounted etc, with the added fun of all documents being in foreign languages: it was recommended that I go to an Insurance broker. This ended up great advice, the small premium I paid to the broker was more than offset by having a policy that was spot on for my circumstances, and actually cheaper than i'd been paying in the UK via an online insurer. When it came to renewal I looked at going direct to the insurer, but the broker was still cheaper even with his cut. Might be worth considering if you can find one in W2.

Thanks guys. This is all great advice.
