Comment: having an inspection at a local specialist in a couple weeks. They have already recommended replacing the IMS at a cost of £1300 plus vat. Very interested in this thread as I am inclined to get it done but still not sure. |
Gawd - how on earth can they diagnose the need for a (very overpriced) IMS bearing without inspecting the car?
(Welcome - nice to see you here BTW). |
To be fair, I turned up without an appointment and one of the owners came and sat with me for 10 minutes to discuss my needs. I really wanted to book in for an inspection but I asked about IMS and then he gave me the info above. I told him I would discuss IMS with them again after the inspection. I asked about simply inspecting the IMS bearing and removing the seal and he said something about a weakness or problem with the IMS shaft which would only be addressed by an upgrade (all new to me).
I can only assume the work he was discussing was much more than simply replacing the bearing but I will report back when I know more. _________________ July 2002 C2 Tiptronic with M030.

How do people get tyres fitted as that's a good price?
The wheels are unmarked and I don't want some chimp scuffing them because I don't want the hassle of repair. _________________ 04/16-09/17 - 996.1 C2 Cabriolet

Since starting this thread back in March 2015 (nearly 2 years ago) there's not been one reported 996 ims bearing failure as far as I'm aware. On the other hand we have witnessed (correct me if I'm wrong) around 4 failures in 997s within that time period.
Not good for the 997. _________________ 2000 Manual 996 C4 Arctic Silver Convertible

comment: As a new 996 owner, I am scared to death that this little tinker is going to destroy my engine!! I have a small RMS leak and I am considering having this and the IMS replaced. However, this will cost me the best part of £1,800!!! Now I don’t know what to do.
PS, hello from a newbie!

The safest option with what you currently have is when you have the RMS replaced, have your ims coverplate removed and check the bearing for any play. When you realise there's nothing wrong with it, ping off the outer bearing seal. By doing this, the bearing will then be forever lubricated by the engine oil and dramatically reduce any issue you may have. It shouldn't cost much more than what you'll be paying to have the RMS replaced.
There is no guarantee with ANY aftermarket replacement and engine builders like Hartech have regularly seen failed 'upgrades'.
Save your money and follow the above advice.
