Fitting a third central X51 radiator to a 997

Great write up, thanks OP.
Out of interest I was considering this mod, but after talking to my local specialist he talked me out of it. He says oil temps of 110-120 are no problem at all, even 125 or 130. Only if tracking the car a lot, and hard, and seeing over 125 regularly would be advise the 3rd rad. Plus temperatures too low are more likely to be damaging.
Also said that its the ethanol in fuel now days that is the primary cause of the scored bored, not so much the temperature.
Interesting stuff (and probably controversial for some)!
I'm posting this as there seems to be a lack of info on what oil temps are normal on here, so sharing is caring.
Thanks

I would have preferred to use glue but as to which type I was unsure. Hopefully someone else can suggest.

Using a hot glue gun would be my preferred way to attach.

If they did come loose, what is the worst that could happen? Again, your thoughts would be welcome.

Puncture?

Is it just me but the 996 kit is £400 the 997.2 kit is £400 and the 997.1 kit has £400 worth of parts in it but is only £102.

Does anyone think Porsche are subsidising this 997.1 kit very heavily

Maxie said:
I am convinced the 997.1 part has been incorrectly priced. This is one reason why I have bought sooner rather than later before they realise and prices are corrected. Otherwise, there is no substantive reason as to why the 996 & 997.2 prices should be vastly different to the 997.1

~ Maxie

I would be surprised Porsche are that stupid as these kits must of been on sale for a while now.

I bought a 997.1 kit 3 or 4 years ago the price hasn't moved since then

Great thread guys. Have just ordered my 997.1 kit from opc Wilmslow.
£102. Must be the best bargain they sell!
.

Great price.

The best bargain are still the gt3 brake duct cooling plastic things at £2 each side. Daft price

At that price for the third rad well worth doing

I have a Tiptronic so will I have a 3rd rad on mine? Or is that for the auto transmission cooling ? If I have that cooling rad for transmission am guessing you can't add this 3rd for the engine cooling

Will have to check at front of car when I get back

At the start of this thread they discuss a third rad for a 997.2. Is this now considered a worthwhile mod or is there really no need?

What are these £2 GT3 brake ducts that you speak of, is there a part number for said goodies ?

And.... what a fantastic write up OP 👍 I had asked recently why mine did not have a central rad and was told quite rightly that it was for an auto, I asked if I could add one and was told it ran into the thousands of pounds, well £102 pounds sounds right up my street..... I me even going to splash out on the GT3 brake ducts and may well extend to a low temp sender !

I'm also interested in the GT3 ducts!
On the 3rd rad, 2 specialists quoted circa 400 so I guess a fair bit of labour unless you wield a spanner yourself.
Low temp thermostat, mine has one from when hartech rebuilt it.
Like I say though, I've had conflicting info on whether either is needed, and in fact that there may be some detriment to running your engine too cold...
Reams of opinions either way, so not going to get into arguing which is right as I don't know, but with genuine experts not agreeing who's to know!

The last time I checked at OPC they were out of stock but:
99734148392 R Front scoop £2.21
99734148492 L Front scoop £2.21
99733148892 R Rear Scoop £6.46
99733148792 L Rear Scoop £6.46

Theres also a slightly different undertray for GT3 to allow more air to pass over the engine, but thats a bit more money...

The pic below is of the 996 ones, the 997 versions dont look exactly the saem but that gives you an idea of what they do and where they go

Thanks HD 👍

Looks like the duct is more of a deflector ? Which would take the warm air having passed over the rad and direct into or onto the braking surface ?

At £2:21 I could have a punt and see what they entail.

Thanks for the info !

I have had mine fitted for years but now they have flat bottoms due to them touching the road when I'm on it.

I have a pair for sale

£50 !

OK, so..... in the picture above, the blue one is £2:21 and is a duct that channels air up into the area of the brakes, the pink one is a guide which does move air from the rads into the area of the disc ?

Here are the part numbers for the guide,

The left and right 997 GT3 air guides are part number 99757523191 and 99757523291. They retail for 22.85 each. On the 997 GT3 Porsche calls them air distributor.

Bizarrely for the 996 they are 275 ? Not sure how true that is ?

Ah well...... god loves a trier :D

I ordered mine this afternoon, Front's and rear along with the deflectors as well as the frontal rad !

I'm now unsure as to wether I need the GT3 cowling that sits behind the bumper as I have aero kit ? I thought I knew what I was doing until I rang the dealers, it was like having a conversation with my Mother !
