Good morning and Hi from a newbie looking at his first Porsche ownership.
Have a budget of £35-40K and looking at a Gen2 997 with PDK
Couple of questions
First- Do all the Gen2 cars that are not manual come PDK equipped or are there in effect two types of auto?
Second - What are the must have options, the one most people kick themselves for having not having looked for?
Third- is there a preferred warranty most people respect and what are the approx costs.
Apologies if these have been answered before but I'm abroad on 3G and prefer to get offline quick!!
Thanks in advance
Russ

Welcome To the madhouse Russ :thumb:
All auto gen 2 are PDK, on a newer 911 the dealer warranty is essential IMHO and negotiable through the dealers, they insist on 111 point check which should be free, again by negotiation. Certainly worth a haggle for a two year warranty and try to get some off standard price. Newer gen 2 in most peoples opinion is good if it stays in dealer network.
Mine for example has already had nearly a grands worth of warranty work, the warranty came with the car, so in effect now a grand off. I don't believe what was done would of been even picked up never mind fixed outside the dealer network. Dealers love doing 111 point checks, my car has had 3 in 9 months, constant reassurance in my mind that the car is A1 and safe.
Desirable extras?
In theory It's a 911 so for me none! a 911 is all about driving and it doesn't really need any extras, Other than the colour? a modern 997 can blend into the background, colour is critical along with the Sports design wheel if you can get or have fitted if getting from a dealer as a throw in along with negotiations, it's 850.00 to get fitted after at a dealer.
With your budget I'd look at the dealer network for the right car and contact them to let you know of vehicles up and coming, the dealers often contact customers asking if they wish to sell/upgrade their cars. Don't discount the standard C2, but with your budget your around a good C2S amount.
At the moment all gen 2 are holding money quite well.
Despite what others may say I believe on a newer 911 mileage is very important, whether your using as second car or main car, low miles will keep value better, as will as new a car as possible. Dealer prices may seem higher but remember the 2 year warranty is there, if your buying form anywhere else add on 2500 to the price unless you get lucky as I did and get a sale with 2 year warranty included. ( in theory a car outside the dealer network the warranty is void,In theory) warranty is transferable on a private sale

some nice to haves :

Thanks for the very informative reply.
I take it the pdk is the most desirable option. If I don't find one but find nice late model gen 1 C2S I take it manual only?
It will be my main car so reliability is the main concern.
I'm also looking at black and I like the wide body cars.
When you say dealer network, do you mean Porsche.
The local porsche dealership (portsmouth) the cars are >£40k!!
Or do you mean an Independant specialist?
Thanks again
Russ

I think you may struggle to get a PDK sub 40K from OPC - but I'm sure the odd ones pop up and you can always haggle.

August is a dead month for dealers, so a good time to haggle. Worth getting a couple of OPCs to fight over you!

Remember that all OPCs have access to all their cars, so you can talk to someone in Edinburgh, and if you are serious, they can sort a viewing out etc.

The warranty is crucial - IMHO - as I have had mine for a year and had some work done already.

PDK v manual purely personal choice really, if it's the right car for example OPC Leeds have a 09 S gen 2 with 13k on the clock currently at 39995, very good buy and remember full 2 years OPC warranty included with inspection done, that's a bit of a bargain and has Sports Chrono plus and 19 inch turbo wheels. It's not black but guards stunning, if there's one there's more...
Remember though the 2S isn't a wide body (well it is but 4S is wider as turbo) and a 4s is much more expensive.

As your main car for reliability then gen 2 recognised as having no significant issues.

Don't underestimate the benefit of a rear wash wipe!

(Seriously).

Enjoy the search and subsequent ownership experience - a Gen 2 with PDK will be awesome.

Ha - welcome to the club! Yes - a rear wiper is an option.
As I recall not a very expensive one BUT there is quite a following for NO rear wiper because people prefer the "purer" look.
For occasional use I wouldn't worry too much - as a daily driver I can see that this would be quite useful.
Good luck with the search - you are in a god position looking for a gen 2 car with warranty etc.

That's sounds a bloody good price

My gen 2 is a daily driver and it doesn't have a rear wiper. Have never wished I had one :thumb:

Yep I'd certainly be buying this one....

Proves one thing PDK fairly big premium over a manual in 997 carerra form at least. I love my PDK car but I'd snap that manual up in guards with those wheels and that mileage... Funny with OPC though they often put cars up at wrong price wonder if they have done so there.

Makes you wonder - Cardiff have a silver 2009 manual C2S with 30,000 miles for £44k, and Colchester have a blue 2009 manual C2S with 20k miles for £47k!

Values (or at least OPC asking prices ) seem to be holding up nicely.

Mayfair has a black 2009 PDK C2S with 29.5k for £46k, which is encouraging as that's what I paid for a similar car with less miles over a year ago!

As others have said - options are a very personal thing.

I had three essentials - manual box, sports exhaust and Bose....
